Esky gymnasts pick up another win over Miners

NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba gymnastics team put together another solid performance here Wednesday, defeating Negaunee 124.25-114.575 and taking four of the top five places in all-around.

Abbie Derouin led the Eskymos by finishing second in all-around with 33.7 points. She finished first on vault (9.2), second on uneven bars (8.3) and balance beam (8.35) and fourth on floor (7.85).

“Abbie Derouin wowed the crowd and judges with a 9.2 vault and second in individual overall,” Esky assistant head coach Brent Martin said. “She continues to be a beast for us.”

Escanaba’s Lizzy Sliva was third in all-around (30.2) and bars (7.65), fourth on vault (8.3) and fifth on floor (7.65). Maddy Block was fourth in all-around (30.05), third on vault (8.7) and floor (8.05) and fourth on bars (6.7). Caitlyn Davenport was fifth in all-around (29.50), second on floor (8.55) and fifth on vault (8.0) and bars (5.95).

Also placing for Esky was Jasmine Clark with a fourth on beam (7.4).

“I’m really proud of these athletes,” Martin said. “I told them three things before the meet: have fun, don’t be hard on yourself, and most of all, show the judges the reason you do gymnastics is because you love it.

“There was a time those judges were kids doing cartwheels in a playground. I said, ‘Show them the energy that comes with passion.’ I stressed on improving vault on Monday and tonight it showed.”

Negaunee’s May Waters placed first in all-around (35.7), floor (9.1), bars (8.9) and beam (8.4) and took second on vault (8.8).

The Eskymos travel to Grand Ledge in lower Michigan for a meet Friday night and then head to Coldwater for the Coldwater Invitational Saturday.

“We have a major road trip with two competitions,” Martin said. “I told the girls to get plenty of rest and good nutrition in the next few days.

“What a great day for Escanaba gymnastics.”
