Escanaba Bears 14U wins Great North Open Championship

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Bears 14U baseball team was in complete control this weekend as they outscored their opponents 58-5 in the five games played.

The Bears faced Negaunee in the championship game here Sunday. The Bears also got on the board first as Brody Steinhauer grounded out to the shortstop to bring in a run.

Negaunee tied the game in the top of the second inning as Max Cody reached on an error to score a run.

The Bears answered in the bottom of the second as Garrett Lanaville started off the inning with a lead-off double and later scored on an error by the catcher and Logan Kamerschen scored when Bryson Bougie grounded out to the pitcher.

Jayce grounded out in the bottom of the third to bring in a run and extend the Bears lead to 4-1.

“We did a good job this weekend,” Bears coach Brandon Gagnon said. “We still have some baserunning stuff to clean up but I thought we pitched well and hit the ball up and down the lineup.”

Negaunee added a run in the top of the fourth as Gavin Hermes scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Bears scored six runs over the last two innings highlighted by an RBI-double by Vincent DeSalvo Bougie who later scored when Jayce Braun grounded into a fielder’s choice to put the Bears up 8-2.

The Bears got to the championship game defeating Northern Lights from Gaylord 11-1. Blake Gagnon got the start for the Bears allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Cale LeClair and Jayce Braun each collected two hits in the contest. Braun had three RBIs in the game.

The Bears defeated Northern Lights 8-0 on Saturday and also defeated Negaunee 12-2 and finished up the Friday game against Marquette winning 17-0.
