Sports Flashback May31-June 6

May 31, 1966 — The Holy Name Crusaders earned the Upper Peninsula Class A-B golf championship with 337 strokes in the rain, snow and wind at the Newberry Country Club. Escanaba and Crystal Falls Forest Park shot 349 with Eskymos gaining runner-up honors on a tie-breaker. Holy Name’s Bill Peltier and Sault Ste. Marie’s George Vinu shared medalist honors at 79. Gladstone’s Mark Goodman shot 83 and Esky’s Don Coope finished at 85.

June 1, 1966 — Bero Motors unleashed a 21-hit attack in a 16-8 softball triumph over Michigan Hotel. J.C. Miller and Bill Curtis led the winners with three hits apiece. Winning pitcher Carl Eastman allowed nine hits, including home runs by Gordy Nevala, Lowell LaPlant and John Picard.

June 3, 1966 — John Faccio struck out 12 and scattered seven hits as Hermansville posted a 12-8 baseball victory over Loretto-Vulcan in the Wisconsin-Michigan East Division Little League. Jim Paquin rapped three doubles and Tim Faccio added two doubles and a single for the winners.

Milly Boyce shot 47 to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Women’s League. She was followed by Marie Wicklander 48 and Lou Berglund and Rosemary LeMire 49.

June 1, 1981 — Randy Kleiman tossed a three-hitter, struck out eight and walked two while helping the Escanaba Bears post a 2-0 baseball victory over Marinette in the second game of a doubleheader. Tom Ohman’s sacrifice fly provided the Bears with their first run and Bill Savard followed with an RBI single. Jim Lawson and Daryl VanDrese finished with two hits each.

Bill Hillberg contributed two hits and Pete Gregory homered and doubled in Esky’s 9-5 loss in the opener.

Bob Iverson of Hyde, Dale Peterson of Rapid River and Spud Willis won feature races at the Escanaba Raceway.

Iverson took the checkered flag in the late model dash and edged Duke Gardiner of Esky for the victory in a heat race, then moved into the lead in the second lap of the feature. Gardiner was runner-up and Allen Yelle of Sands took third in the feature.

Gardiner, however, nipped Iverson at the wire in the pursuit.

Peterson added victories in the sportsmen’s heat race and pursuit, finished runner-up in the dash and beat Bill Flath of Esky in the feature.

In hobby stock, Willis also won the pursuit. Chuck Dubord of Esky took the chekered flag in the dash and second heat and Dan McDonald, also of Esky, copped the first heat.

June 3, 1981 — Recent Escanaba High School graduate Jeff Koch led the way in the Highland Golf Club Men’s League with a one-over par 72 strokes. He was followed by Roy Henderson with 75 and Jim Dufresne, Bill Carlson and Jerry Sundquist at 76.
