Escanaba defeats Marquette in four sets

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos were challenged, but prevailed on Senior HIght here Tuesday in a 3-1 (26-24, 19-25. 25-21, 25-19) volleyball triumph over the Marquette Sentinels.

A kill by senior Harlee Coolman gave the Eskymos an insurmountable 24-17 advantage in thie fourth set of this Great Northern Conference match.

Esky senior Mary Kate Tourangeau started the fourth with a seven-point service run.

The Eskymos took a 9-3 lead on a Sentinels’ hitting error before junior Claire Parent blocked a shot by senior Ava Stahlboerger to shave their deficit to 9-4.

Esky then committed three straight hitting miscues and junior Sophie Hausmann blocked a shot by Stahlboreger to bring Marquette within 9-8.

After the Sentinels tied the score at nine, Esky regained the lead on a kill by Tourangeau and Stahlboerger added one to give the Eskymos a 11-9 edge.

Marquette was still within 14-13 following a kill by sophomore Allie Sims before a kill by Landry Bary gave the Eskymos a sideout and two-point cushion.

A service ace by junior Kelsey Reimer made it 16-13 and a block by senior Susan Moberg gave Eaky a 17-13 lead.

“I love our team,” Moberg said. “I look forward to playing with them everytime. I think the home environment helped. Having our fans is really important. They’re really a good team. This was a better performance tonight than we had Thursday (in a 3-2 victory over Menominee).”

Back-to-back passing errors by Marquette gave the Eskymos a 19-14 cushion and Bray added a kill to put them up by six points.

Marquette trimmed its deficit to five on a kill by Parent before Bray pushed the ball over the ned for a kill, putting the Eskymos up 21-15.

“We got all the girls in tonight,” Esky coach Bev Ziebell said. “We’re getting to the point where everyone can play well. Everyone is happy when they hit the floor. Susie got a lot of kills early in the season. We had her setting for a while, then we went back to that tonight.”

In the first set, Bray served for four consecutive aces as Esky gained a 22-12 advantage.

The Eskymos still led 24-17 following a kill by Molberg prior to committing a service error.

Senior Kiersten Swanson followed with a six-point service run as the Sentinels tied the score at 24.

The Sentinels then committed passing and hitting miscues, enabling the Eskymos to take the opener 26-24.

Marquette took charge in the second, gaining an 8-2 lead on back-to-back kills by Sims, forcing Esky to use a time-out.

The Eskymos were trailing 12-4 prior to getting a sideout on a block by Coolman, who hit an ace to bring them within 12-9 a short time later.

A kill by junior Grace Filizetti gave the Sentinels a 16-10 cushion before service and hitting miscues allowed the Eskymos to get within 17-15.

Marquette led 22-19 following a delay of game infraction, then got a sideout and secured that set on an ace by junior Harlow Davis.

The third set was tied at eight before a Sentinel net violation enabled Esky to regain the lead.

Esky gained a 13-9 lead when Coolman recorded a kill on a freeball.

Three consecutive hitting miscues, however, enabled the Sentinels to trim their deficit to 13-12 and gained a 16-15 lead on another hitting error.

The score was still tied at 21 when Bray pushed the ball over the net for a kill.

Esky then took advantage of two passing errors before an ace by Tourangeau and a kill by Bray secured that set.

Tourangeau recorded eight aces to go with 25 assists and six digs. Bray and Stahlboerger added four aces apiece.

Moberg finished with 13 kills, including five blocks. Stahlboerger collected nine. Bray tallied seven and Coolman had six.

Coolman collected 25 digs and senior Chloe Dubord had 24.

Both teams end their regular season Thursday when Esky visits Manistique and Marquette travels to Kingsford.
