Bark River-Harris’ Oswald qualifies for YMCA Nationals
BROWN DEER, Wis. — Bark River senior Esther Oswald swam to another qualifying time for YMCA Nationals in the 200 backstroke over the weekend at the YMCA U.P./Wisconsin state swim meet at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis.
“I was stunned. She previously qualified in the 100 back and was several seconds off in other events, so I wasn’t expecting it. Qualifying for Nationals in one event is a huge accomplishment, let alone in multiple events,” said Northern Lights YMCA swim team head coach Scott Dykema. “Esther swam phenomenal this weekend and her dedication really showed.”
The YMCA National Festival meet will be held in Brown Deer April 9 -11.
The Northern Lights swim team as a whole had a successful state tournament with several team records broken and many personal and seasonal best times.
Swimming in the 13-14 girls division, Adrianna Getzloff (15) placed fourth in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.15, breaking the previous team record. Adrianna also placed sixth in the 200 back (2:16.14) and ninth in the 50 free.
“Adrianna’s time in the 100 back puts her just over a second away from a qualifying national time,” said Dykema.
Adrianna was one of three Getzloff siblings, including Ava (15) and Colten (15), who qualified for the state meet.
Swimmers were allowed to choose up to two additional bonus events to swim in at the state meet. She swam in the 200 back, dropping 3.55 seconds off her personal best (2:19.18) and placing eight and the 50 freestyle (27.07). Ava qualified in the 100 back (1:04.81) also.
Colten Getzloff qualified in the 13-14 boys 50 freestyle (25.77). He also swam in the 500 free (5:38.00), dropping 17.35 seconds off his best time.
“Colten is a very talented swimmer,” said Dykema. “He’s worked hard this season and is seeing the results in his swims. Dropping such a large amount of time shows this.”
Nate Lanaville (15) swam to his personal best times this season in the 50 free (24.54), 100 free (53.09), 200 free (2:06.09) and the 500 free (5:38.50).
Irene Neumeier also swam some of her personal best times this season in the 50 free (27.40), 100 free (1:01.12) and the 500 free (6:02.64).
Annabella Neumeier swam her best time in the 50 freestyle (27.10).
“I’m so proud of how all of our state qualifiers swam at the meet,” Dykema said. “We were limited with our training this year due to Covid restrictions but they all chose to come in and continue training on their own.
“Their dedication shows. I can’t wait to see what great things the next year will bring for all the swimmers.”
