Sports Flashback June 7-13

June 7, 1966 — David Moberg ripped a two-run single in the 10th inning, lifting the Teamsters to a 5-3 baseball victory over the Bankers in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. John Moberg became the winning pitcher, striking out nine and scattering eight hits. Bob Stacey allowed 11 hits and took the loss.

June 9, 1966 — The Merchants unleashed a 16-hit attack in a 15-1 softball rout of Mead. Jim McGovern led the way with three hits, including a home run. Bob Corriveau also collected three hits and Don Martineau homered.

June 10, 1966 — Rosemary LeMire shot 45 to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Women’s League. Ruth Needham carded a 46, followed by Doris Swanson 47 and Sally Fontaine and Harriet Fitzharris 48.

State Bank posted its fourth straight victory in an 11-1 conquest of Tim & Sally’s Restaurant in the Girls’ Softball League. Betty Thorsen was the winning pitcher.

June 13, 1966 — Jim Douglas of Highland Golf Club was crowned champion of the Highland Open, finishing with 112 strokes in the 27-hole tournament. Highland’s Jerry Martin was runner-up at 113 and Mike Johnson of Marquette placed third with 114.

Rick Lancour fired a two-hitter, leading Harnischfeger to a 4-1 softball victory over Mead. Lancour fanned eight and walked just one and Roger Chylek, Doug Howard and Dave DeSalvo rapped doubles. Warren Nye and Don Cousineau had two hits apiece for Mead.

June 8, 1981 — Bill Baum sank a hole-in-one on the 120-yard No. 3 hole at the Escanaba Country Club. Baum, who used an 8-iron on his ace, finished his round with 46.

June 9, 1981 — Mark Heim threw a one-hitter as Schaffer edged Pioneer Kitchens 4-3 in the Escanaba Senior Little League. Heim fanned 10 and walked six and John Meehan worked five frames for Pioneer, which had won 20 straight games dating back to last season.

Dan Kleikamp tossed a three-hitter as Snowden, Inc. posted a 1-0 softball victory over Pabst. Mike Levesque, who reached on an error, scored the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly by Denny Erickson.

June 10, 1981 — Erv Page tossed a three-hitter as the Gladstone Indians posted a 3-0 American Legion baseball victory over the Escanaba Bruins. Bill Richer singled twice for the Indians and Daryl Starnes absorbed the loss despite throwing a two-hitter.

Jim Carlson fired a two-hitter as Murph’s Bar defeated Stroh’s 10-3 in men’s fastpitch softball. Jack Herrick collected four hits and Jerry Moran added three off Jug Bourdeau.

June 11, 1981 — Kevin Tapani and Larry Preaseau combined on a one-hitter and 15 strikeouts as the Escanaba Cubs romped past Hermansville 19-0 in American Legion baseball. Tapani, Dean VanDrese and Brian Franks slammed home runs to lead the nine-hit attack.

June 13, 1981 — Flat Rock scored five times in the seventh inning to defeat Rapid River 14-9 in a Gladstone Girls’ Little League softball contest. Lori Eugate rapped a home run and triple for Flat Rock. Kim Picord added a round-tripper. Dawn Delvaux and Shelly Flemal also tripled. Patty Thurber ripped a triple and Kim Hilgendorf doubled for Rapid River.
