ST. NICHOLAS — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves continued their winning ways here Thursday night, posting a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-13) volleyball triumph over the Mid Peninsula Wolverines.

Carney, which improved to 5-0 with the non-conference victory, gained an 8-1 lead on a service ace by junior Mary Sivula.

The Wolves, who didn’t allow Mid Pen to get any closer than 10-4 in the opener, continued to pull away through the remainder of that set.

“We did a better job serving tonight than Tuesday (in a 3-0 victory at Bark River-Harris),” said C-N coach Steve Kedsch. “We started to see more of a flow tonight. We got a fast start in the first set which always helps your communication, but Mid Pen stayed aggressive in the second and third set and gave us a battle.”

The Wolverines (1-1) took a 5-4 lead in the second set on a kill by senior Allyson Lancour.

C-N, behind a six-point service run by senior Liana Blahnik, then surged to an 11-5 advantage.

Mid Pen was within 14-10 before the Wolves used an 8-3 run to gain a 22-13 cushion on a hitting error by the Wolverines.

A two-hit violation by C-N enabled the Wolverines to trim their deficit to 23-17 before the Wolves all but clinched that set on a kill by senior Taylor Kedsch.

In the third set, C-N led just 9-7 following a two-hit violation.

The Wolverines were still within 13-8 after a kill by junior Landry Koski.

C-N then sealed the deal by outscoring Mid Pen 12-5 through the remainder of the finale.

Taylor Kedsch finished with 12 kills and Blahnik added eight. Senior setter Haley Ernest collected five kills, three blocks, 25 assists and 12 digs and junior Malorie Baumler finished with five kills and junior libero Mackenzie Walcher had 12 digs.

“It was nice to see Malorie step up tonight,” said coach Kedsch. “We’re looking for our juniors to play good roles and keep improving as the season goes on.”

Koski led the Wolverines at the net with five kills and seven blocks. Lancour added five kills and five blocks and senior setter Daisy Englund collected eight assists.

Junior Shae Lampinen was Mid Pen’s defensive leader with 11 digs. Sophomore Kora Prater added 10 and Lancour and Englund had six apiece.

“Daisy was all over the floor,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “She and Allyson are strong leaders for the girls. Carney had awesome serving tonight. We’re definitely in a rebuilding phase, but we’re very grateful the girls can all play.”
