Eskymos swept by Miners

NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba girls tennis team faced a tough opponent in Negaunee Monday, and the Eskymos couldn’t hold back Negaunee as the Miners shut out Esky 8-0.

Esky had a difficult time on the road. However, the Eskymos’ Jacey Moreau made a good showing at No. 1 singles against Lily Nelson, 6-4, 6-2.

“Jacey Moreau really battled well at No. 1 singles today in losing two close sets,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “We’ll work to build on the good tennis we played today as we see Menominee tomorrow.”

Esky’s Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell also made progress beating back the Miners’ duo of Faith Mager and Daylyn Drew at No. 4 doubles, winning three games in each set but not being able to take it further.

At No. 3 doubles, Negaunee’s Emma Miller and Madi Austin had a difficult time putting down the Eskymos duo of McKenna Bullen and Lilia Hughes in the second set, 6-4.

Grace Wickham and Lizzy Sliva didn’t give up at No. 2 doubles, winning four games in two sets (6-1, 6-3) against the Miners’ Shayla and Tianna Williams.

Esky’s Erica Moore and Madi Mishica didn’t have an answer, however, for Morgan Carlson and Katelyn Lammi, 6-1, 6-0.

For the remainder of singles, Sophia Derkos won three games off of Negaunee’s Jillian Skewis in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1, and Esky’s Ukiah Penegor adapted in the second set against Lexi Mason, 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 4 singles, the Eskymo’s Amanda Beem fell to Annika Tervo, 6-1, 6-0.

“Negaunee is one of the better teams in the UP and they showed why today,” Ogren said. “They have talent from top to bottom, but many of our girls did well to play competitive matches.”
