Esky track sweeps

MENOMINEE — The Escanaba track teams doubled their pleasure here Thursday, sweeping both ends of a season-opening triangular meet.

Esky’s girls won 13 events and collected 104 2/3 points. They were followed by Menominee 22 1/3 and Rapid River 19 on this breezy and seasonably cool day.

The Esky boys scored 69, followed by Menominee 45 and Rapid River 35.

“We’re very happy with the results,” said Esky boys’ coach Scott Dykema. “This is a confidence builder for the kids. The guys are really pumped.”

Esky junior Dan Smith won discus at 115 feet, 8 1/2 inches and the 3200-meter run in 12 minutes, 15.24 seconds. Classmate Nick Hamlin copped the 200 at 24.95 seconds and 400 (58.37), and senior Austin Watchorn took shot put (37-0).

“Dan did real well in distance and disc,” said Dykema. “Two of our fastest guys weren’t here today, but we’re excited about our young sprint team. Nick was a pleasant surprise in the 200, and Austin had a nice throw in shot.”

Rapid River senior Jaiden McCarty won the 800 (2:31.19). Logan Lancour took pole vault (9-0), and junior Ian Sundling captured long jump (18-0).

Menominee senior and current Upper Peninsula Division 1 high jump record-holder Brady Schultz won at 6-2.

Esky senior Ciara Ostrenga captured the 200 (28.43) and 400 (1:04.29). Sophomore Sophia Wagner copped the 100 (14.12) and pole vault (7-6), and senior Bailey Barron added firsts in the 300 hurdles (56.08) and long jump (13-9).

“The girls did well,” said Esky coach Dan DeLong. “Ciara ran strong races, and we’re happy about Annabelle (Neumeier) winning the 3200 and her second in the 1600 was a nice surprise. Our hurdles went real well. Allison Korpi threw 103 feet in disc, which is a real nice throw. Kennedy (Olson) is very good. Looks like Rapid River has a couple nice relays. Their handoffs were real good for the first meet.”

Olson won shot (37-4) and disc (111-1), and junior Attica Brandt added a first in the 1600 (6:29.64).

“We were missing some girls due to the school play, but Attica run a nice 1600,” said Menominee coach Scott Melchoir. “She had a real strong finish, and Kennedy is very strong in the weight events. It was great for all the schools to get on the track. The kids needed to compete.”

Rapid River junior Aiyana Semear anchored the winning sprint relays.

“It’s nice to come to Menominee and win a couple relays,” said Rockets’ coach Greg Rubick. “We only have 10 girls but have some quality athletes. We’re still rounding into shape. This is the third year we came to this meet. We enjoy coming here.”

Menominee visits Esky as part of a five-school meet Tuesday. Rapid River hosts the Delta County Invitational Thursday.
