Esky baseball sweeps Manistique Thursday

MANISTIQUE — The Escanaba baseball team swept Manisitique here Thursday, holding off an Emeralds rally, 7-5, in the opener and shutting them out in the nightcap 16-0.

The nightcap ended after three innings, with the Eskymos scoring three runs in the first inning, four in the second and nine in the third.

Esky’s Ben Johnson finished the nightcap with a no-hitter, striking out six and walking four.

Johnson also finished with three hits and four RBIs. Hunter Lancour earned three RBIs and two hits, Jared Hanson collected two RBIs and two hits, and Trent Lawson, Scott Hiller and Austin Nelson all notched one RBI.

Isaiah Brow took the loss for the Emeralds over two innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs and striking out and walking one.

In the opener, the Eskymos jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning and then added two more in the top of the third to make it 4-0.

Esky’s Jarrett Olson grounded out to allow Bon LaChance and Hiller to score in the second, and Johnson batted Lawson in, in the third before reaching home thanks to a double from LaChance.

The Emeralds made it on the board in the bottom of the third when a single from Jack McEvers drove Kody Brudvik in.

Both teams added another in the fourth and each added two in the fifth.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, down 7-4, a grounder from Brow drove in Parker Graphos to cut the Emeralds’ deficit to 7-5 but were unable to capitalize on the momentum

Lancour earned the win over three and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits, two runs and three walks while striking out seven. Hiller pitched the remainder in relief, with five hits, three runs, three walks and five strikeouts.

Olsen finished with three RBIs, LaChance earned two RBIs and two hits and Hiller notched one RBI.

Graphos took the loss for the Emeralds over two and one-third innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out one. Carson Sprader went two and two-thirds innings, with four hits and four runs while striking out three.

Blixt, McEvers, Brow and Josh Curtis earned one RBI apiece.
