Hughes wins Holly XC Invitational
DAVISBURG, Mich. — Gladstone junior Drew Hughes landed a big prize here Saturday, earning top honors in Division 3 at the Holly Invitational cross country meet.
Hughes covered the 3.1-mile course in a personal-best 16 minutes, 29.2 seconds and is believed to be the first male runner from the Upper Peninsula to be crowned champion in the meet’s 53-year history. He also received the Outstanding Runner award for Division 3-4-5.
He was followed by Lucas Danic (16:38.9) and Chase Dietrich (16:52.8), both from Flint Powers Catholic.
Sault Ste. Marie senior Cody Aldridge placed ninth in D-3 at 17:37.8.
Other Gladstone finishers were sophomore Tanner Howes 36th (19:09.9) and freshman Aaron Hughes 41st (19:17.4).
The Gladstone girls were led by senior Jamisyn Bergeron in 41st (22:45.9) followed by classmates Samantha Strasler 47th (23:09) and Lilly Karl 61st (23:50.6) and freshmen Lauren Sundquist 72nd (24:21.4) and Kristy Karl 77th (24:58.2) and sophomore Kayla Farnes 87th (27:23.3).
Goodrich took the team championship with 41 points. Sault placed eighth at 226 and Gladstone was 11th with 268.
The Braves resume in Saturday’s John Prokos Memorial Invitational in Escanaba.
