Drew Hughes takes first at Firecracker

GLADSTONE — Drew Hughes was after a personal best in Sunday’s Fran Cannon Firecracker Run.

He indeed accomplished that while winning the five-mile race in 29 minutes, 21.8 seconds.

The Gladstone High School junior to be was followed by Jake Strasler (31:31) and Lucas Hughes (31:43) both of Gladstone, Adam White of Marquette (32:19.3) and Matt Dykema of Escanaba (32:46.1).

“I wanted to run a 5:50 pace and felt good with that,” said Drew, who placed third overall in the MISH Waterfront Half-Marathon June 26. “This was a good conditioner for cross country. It got hot and humid, but I really like this race.”

Abigail Petr, who’s entering her junior year at East Grand Rapids, took the women’s title at 33:43.5. She was followed by Brittany Richard of Garden (36:07.3), Bridget Becker of Gladstone (37:41.7), Becky Cozzi of Villa Park, Ill. (37:52) and Lilly Karl of Gladstone (40:12.6).

“I started with a solid pace and was having fun,” said Petr. “This was just a good workout for me. I wanted to see if I could get close to winning it for the women. There was a little sun on the boardwalk, but it was actually nice out there.”

Emersyn Comstock (8:07.2) and Kayd Comstock (8:18.5) led the way in the kids’ one-mile fun run. Cohen Gerard of downstate Rockford placed third (8:19.2).

Rylan Jasso of Escanaba was the top area finisher in fifth (8:54.1), and Camille Richard of Gladstone was the girls’ winner in seventh (9:13).

The races, held under sunny conditions with temperatures well into the 70s, drew more than 200 runners and walkers.
