Stephenson at Mid Peninsula

ST. NICHOLAS — Thursday night gave the Mid Peninsula Wolverines boy’s basketball another opportunity to grow as they lost 72-19 against Stephenson in St. Nicholas.

“I think we were intimidated a little bit,” said Wolverines coach Mark Branstrom. “Stephenson is a very good team, they just outhustled us.”

Mid Pen is still without Michael Englund, their leading scorer, who was injured last week against Engadine. Without him, Branstrom said, the rest of the youthful team has had an opportunity to step up and continue to learn and grow, a process he is excited about.

“This is a very good group,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with them. And when the time comes, we’re going to be pretty decent.”

The Wolverines host Rapid River tonight.

Hannahville at Big Bay de Noc

GARDEN CORNERS — The Hannahville Soaring Eagles boys basketball team defeated the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears 62-42 Thursday night in Garden Corners.

“I think they took it a little easy on us,” said Black Bears coach Brad McPhee. “They didn’t press, and we expected a press. Even against their starters, we did okay.”

Going into the Hannahville matchup, Big Bay was coming off a rough night against Mid Peninsula.

“We laid an egg against Mid Pen,” said Mcphee. “I’m pleased with how our team responded to how did on Tuesday.”

Up next for Big Bay is Mackinaw Island, a game rescheduled from last week. That game will be played Saturday in Garden Corners.

Girls

Gladstone at Gwinn

GWINN — The Gladstone Braves girls basketball team (2-1) grabbed win number two of their season Thursday night against the Gwinn Modeltowners (0-4) 52-31 in Gwinn.

“It was a good all-around team victory,” said Braves coach Andy Cretens. “We had a lot of people who stepped up and played roles.”

Cretens mentioned Megan Crow — who earned a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds — as one of those role players as she continues to step into a more vocal role as a leader.

Alaina Trudeau was another player Cretens mentioned, particularly in regards to her reads. Trudeau had 11 points in the game. Also putting up 10 for the Braves was Claire van Ginhoven.

Gwinn was down one of their guards, Lena Pleaugh, whose absence seemed to play a role in the Braves victory said Cretens.

Gladstone will take a few days to regroup before their next game on Tuesday against Kingsford. The Braves will host that game.

Stephenson at Mid Peninsula

ST. NICHOLAS — With a strong rally, the Mid Peninsula girls basketball edged the Stephenson Eagles 34-32 Thursday at Mid Peninsula.

The Wolverines (3-2) trailed for the majority of the game with the help of lackluster efficiency from the field, but peaked at the right time to earn the win over the Eagles.

“We put a press on for most of the game,” Wolverines coach Phil Croasdell said. “We were 12 of 60, and Stephenson was 15 of 35. I think we did a decent job, and we got the right shot at the right time.

Daisy Englund led the Wolverines with 18 points, four triples and five steals, and Landry Koski earned eight points along with 11 rebounds.

“Daisy, in the second half, got three of her 3’s when we needed them,” Croasdell said. “It was just a good game on both sides.

“Our girls busted their butts. Our overall shooting was poor, but, other than that, those kids were giving over 100%. Glad we came out on top because I think it was the first lead we had.”

Stephenson 10 14 6 2 — 32

Mid Peninsula 5 12 8 9 — 34

Stephenson — P. Cappaert 12, J. Havelka 4, Anderson 14, C. Havleka 2; F: 14; Fouled out: none; FT: 2-2.

Carney-Nadeau at Bark River

HARRIS — Coming off a tough loss against Menominee, the Bark River-Harris girls basketball team improved, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Carney-Nadeau. The undefeated Wolves earned a 49-41 win at Bark River (4-2) Thursday.

The Broncos were only trailing by one in the first, but a lopsided second quarter gave the Wolves an advantage they didn’t let go of.

“Once we got behind in the second half, they kind of kept that five to 11-point lead for the rest of the game,” Broncos coach Matt Richer said. “We had three crucial turnovers in the second quarter that led to (points). It seemed like we got sloppy, and it continued into the third until the fourth when we picked it up a bit.”

The Broncos made some headway in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.

“We made a run in the fourth quarter,” Richer said. “We cut it to three, but the end of the game was just free throws. I liked that we didn’t give up. It was a nice bounce-back game from the Menominee game.”

Tessa Wagner led the Wolves with 17 points, and Haley Ernest followed with 10.

The Broncos were led by Allison Richer with 16 points and three triples, and Cara Zawacki earned 14.

Bark River travels to North Central Monday.
