Sports Flashback July 5-11
July 5, 1966 — Ishpeming Woody’s Bar captured the Escanaba Invitational softball championship in a 5-3 triumph over the Escanaba Merchants. Bob Corriveau rapped a two-run homer in the first inning and scored on triple by Tony Derkos in the sixth.
July 7, 1966 — Doris Swanson led the way in the Escanaba Country Club Women’s League by shooting a 43. She was followed by Sally Fontaine 45, Rosemary LeMire 46, Gloria Hansley and Lou Berglund 47, Peg Douglas 48 and Marie Wicklander 49.
Vicki Beck shot the best score in the Highland Golf Club Women’s League with a 45. Carolyn Nelson hit 48 and Gladys Hansen had 49.
July 11, 1966 — Jerry Martin of Highland retained his Tri-Club golf title, firing 107 in the 27-hole tournament. Dave Friets of Highland was runner-up on his home course at 108, followed by Jack Smith 111 and Barney Barnhart 114.
July 6, 1981 — Lee LeCaptain of Escanaba captured the men’s title in the Stroh’s Great Lakes Log Rolling Championships at Gladstone, defeating two-time defending champ Fred Scheer of Hayward, Wis. Fred Sayklly of Esky placed third, followed by Chris Fischer of Stillwater, Minn. and Mark Howarth of Fort Frances, Ont.
Kris Ochu Mingus of Eau Claire, Wis. earned her first major title with a victory over last year’s champion Lynda Friske of River Falls, Wis. They were followed by Judy Scheer Hoeschler of LaCrosse, Wis. and Roxanne Ochu of Hayward.
Marcine Smith drained a hole-in-one at the Gladstone Golf Club. She got her ace on the 100-yard No. 4 hole, using a 9-iron.
July 9, 1981 — Barb Zeni carded a 44 to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Women’s League. Barb Scott and Sally Fontaine hit 45. They were followed by Denise Boyle and Marilyn Christianson at 46, Diana Davis, June Baum and Dorothy Zenker 47, Betty Gauthier, Dawn Smith and Noami Taylor 48 and Gloria Hansley and Nona Pearson 49.
July 10, 1981 — Log Jam unleashed a 17-hit attack in a 13-9 softball triumph over Mead American. Terry Steinmetz and Bill Fournier recorded three hits each and Tom Kane added two doubles for Log Jam. Leroy Rappette led Mead with a pair of hits.
July 11, 1981 — Jim Hilgendorf fired a one-hitter as the Escanaba Independents blanked Boobie’s Bar Brewers 8-0 in the Men’s Fastpitch Softball League. Duane Beauchamp paced the Independents with four hits. Jeff Davis, Mike Zimmerman and Mike Moore added two apiece.
