Uriah Aili shatters his own course record by 41 seconds at Manistique Emerald Chase
MANISTIQUE — They say records are made to be broken.
Not only did Uriah Aili of Manistique beat his own course record here Saturday morning. He shattered it by 41 seconds in the Emerald Chase five-kilometer run.
The Bessemer High School graduate covered the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 10.3 seconds on this sunny and very warm day.
David Partyka of Manistique was a distant runner-up at 18:44.7, followed by Ben Goldsworthy of Fishers, Ind. (18:58.1).
Aili, who coaches track at IUE University in Richmond, Ind., is trying to get ready for the 2028 World Olympics in Los Angeles where he hopes to compete in the 1500-meter run.
“I’m super fortunate to be able to travel around the country and represent Bessemer,” he said. “I need to get around 3:50 for the mile and 3:36 for the 1500. I’m just having the time of my life. I’m just thankful the Lord allows me to do that.”
Anabelle LaFoille of Manistique took the women’s title at 23:56.1. She was followed by Sarah McDaniel of Manistique (24:10.4) and Danielle Goudreau of Manistique. (24:25.6).
“I’m happy with my time,” LaFoille said. “I just wanted to have fun while I was doing it. I knew I was going to do well, but winning it was little bit of a surprise. It was hot out there. I’m going into seventh grade. I’ll be doing middle school cross country this fall.”
Sydney Labreck of Tipp City, Oh. won the 10-K (6.2 miles) in 46:51.1, followed by men’s cham Cameron Desjarden of Cooks (51:53.9) and Chet McDougle of Manistique (55:13.5).
The races drew 107 runners.
