Iron Mountain advances to state tournament for 13-14 All-Stars

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain 13-14 All-Stars punched their ticket to the state tournament with a 13-4 win over Gladstone here Friday.

Gladstone got on the board first as Jaxdon Quigley drove in two runs in the top of the first inning.

Iron Mountain responded in the bottom of the first as Martin Husing grounded out to score a run and Daniel Doers scored on a passed ball to tie the game at two.

I was feeling good out there,” Doers said. “I’m excited for the state tournament. It’s my first one and I’m looking forward to playing with my friends.”

Gladstone took the lead back in the top of the third inning as Mason Holochwost drew a bases loaded walk to score a run and Eliot Bosk hit a ground ball and reached on a fielder’s choice to score a run to put Gladstone up 4-2.

Iron Mountain answered again as they put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by a two-run single by Sam Rossi.

“We hit the ball really well today,” Rossi said. “It was a close game in the beginning and I was happy we were able to get up there and make plays.”

Iron Mountain advanced to the championship game defeating Kingsford 22-6 in the game that was postponed after rain on Wednesday.

Iron Mountain scored 13 of their 22 runs in the seventh inning.

Kingsford dropped into the loser’s bracket and fell 7-6 to Gladstone in eight innings. Jaxdon Quigley hit a single into right field to bring in the winning run.

“The coach told me to wait for the first strike,” Quigley said. “I took the first two balls and didn’t want to end the game on a walk. I was kind of late on it and it went to right field.

Mason Holochwost came in to pitch for Quigley and held serve for the team on the mound in a pressure situation.

“Coach said just put the ball in play and we will do the rest,” Holochwost said, “My fastball and ny curveball were both working well for me on the mound.

Iron Mountain and Negaunee will represent the U.P. in the state tournament starting this Friday.
