BR-H tops Norway

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris girls built a comfortable lead in the second quarter and maintained it here Monday night in a 49-30 basketball triumph over the Norway Knights.

BR-H led 17-9 after the opening frame and extended its lead to 28-9 on a layup by senior forward Kassidy Roll with three minutes left in the second stanza of this Skyline Central Conference contest.

“We ran our offense well, only I wish we would have hit a few more layups,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “We kind of opened it up at times, but turned the ball over too many times. We gave away too many opportunities. It seems like we do that a lot on days when there’s no school. We’re not quite in rhythm yet.”

The teams combined for 54 turnovers, including 28 by the Broncos (4-0 overall, 3-0 SCC).

Norway (2-2 overall and league) scored the last seven points of the second stanza, trimming its deficit to 28-16 on a putback by junior guard Kassandra Gyselinck five seconds before halftime.

The Knights came within 28-18 on a set shot from near the free throw line by senior forward Cadeance Lindsley’s early in the third and were still within 32-21 following a set shot from the lane by junior guard Kali Stanchina halfway through the quarter.

The Broncos responded with six unanswered points, gaining a 38-21 advantage on an underhanded shot from the boulevard by junior Tressa Ives.

“We’re a couple girls short and weren’t ready for their pressure,” said Norway coach Joe Tinti. “We played like an early-season team. We were able to control the tempo at times, but not enough to be competitive for four quarters. We’re a work in progress. We have a new team, and we’re still getting used to each other. For the most part, we played good defense. These girls work hard and will continue to work hard. We were able to execute what we wanted, only at times we didn’t execute well enough.”

BR-H continued to pull away in the fourth and led by as much as 49-25 with three minutes left to play.

“I think we played a little better defensively tonight,” said coach Richer. “We’re kind of learning on the fly with each other. Everyone got to play a lot of minutes. I like our talent and athletes. We’re working hard at it. We’re kind of a streaky team. We tend to exchange runs with teams.”

Junior forward Aspen Frederick the Broncos with 11 points and eight rebounds and senior guard Alexis Berg collected four assists. Gyselinck was Norway’s leader with 19 points.

BR-H, which dropped the jayvee game 49-30, hosts Menominee tonight. Norway hosts Iron Mountain Thursday.
