Broncos shut out Emeralds
Douglas Troyer Bark River-Harris’ Keaton Bartoszek (13) finds a hole to run through against Manistique Friday at Manistique.
MANISTIQUE — The Bark River-Harris Broncos stuck to the basics here Friday night in a 28-0 football triumph over the Manistique Emeralds.
BR-H ran for 304 of its 324 yards while improving to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the WestPAC Conference’s Iron Division.
“We wanted to keep it simple,” said BR-H assistant coach Bob Maycroft, who handled the head coaching duties in Al Stenberg’s absence. “We wanted to beat them up front, and our offensive line played well. I think we dominated the left side.”
Junior fullback Trevor Lippens led the Broncos in rushing with 143 yards on 25 carries.
He gave BR-H an 8-0 lead on a two-yard run off left tackle and two-point conversion with four minutes, 41 seconds left in the first quarter.
Senior Tyler Racicot hiked the Broncos’ advantage to 16-0 on a quarterback sneak with 2:03 remaining in the second.
Classmate Clayton Eichhorn made it 22-0 on an eight-yard run to the right side midway through the third, and Keaton Bartoszek ended the scoring on a four-yard run up the middle early in the fourth.
“We have depth at running back,” said Maycroft. “I almost have to apologize to Trevor for running him so much. They took away our trap early, and we went to the jet sweep. We just took what they gave us. We didn’t want to do anything Al wouldn’t want us to do. We threw three passes, and I was almost sorry we threw the first one. We need to sharpen up some things in practice, but I think we’re peaking at the right time. I thought Max Hall played an excellent game at linebacker.”
With Manistique trailing 8-0 early in the second stanza, senior Wyatt Gierke swiped a pass and returned it to the Emeralds’ 30.
The Emeralds then reached the Broncos’ 31-yard line where they turned the ball over on downs.
“They’re a pretty good team,” said Emeralds’ coach Todd Kangas. “They’re a physical team, and their backs run hard. We didn’t give up the big play. We made them work for their points, but still gave up too much yardage. I don’t think we’re a small team, but I don’t know if we’re bigger than anybody we’ve played.”
Manistique (1-3 overall, 1-1 Iron Division) was limited to 108 yards in total offense, including 60 on the ground. They were led by freshman Parker Graphos, who carried 10 times for 35. Gierke was 1-of-3 passing for 20.
“I thought our kids gave a good effort, only we lack experience,” said Kangas. “When you’re in that situation, you sometimes take penalties at inopportune times. We have 10 kids who didn’t play high school football last year. We’re a work in progress.”
The Emeralds visit Norway Friday. The Broncos are idle until Oct. 24 when they travel to L’Anse.
