Big Bay de Noc sweeps Ojibwe Charter

GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc soccer team earned its first win of the season 7-4 against Ojibwe Charter here Tuedsay.

A Black Bears goal in the first 30 seconds of the game established their momentum, and they added four more in the first half.

“Our defense was playing really tough,” Black Bears coach Alex Ranguette said. They shut down some of Ojibwe’s best players which allowed our offense to go to work” Ranguette said.

With a 5-0 deficit, Ojibwe Charter couldn’t recover in the second half.

Big Bay’s Travis Johnson scored a hat trick, and Nick Desjarden, Cam Miller, Teagan Lawrence and Braedon Thill all added a goal.

Big Bay hosts Munising Baptist Thursday.

On the volleyball side, the Black Bears also took home a win against Ojibwe in three sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-20).

“The girls did a nice job tonight of keeping their energy up tonight,” Big Bay volleyball coach Angie Paulson said. “That’s something we’ve really been struggling with is creating our own momentum and not getting into our own heads when we get behind.”

Despite struggling in the first set, the Black Bears found more cohesion as the sets went on.

“After the first set, they started to flow a little better,” Paulson said. “They overcame their errors and played like a team.”

Big Bay’s Piper Jones finished with one ace, five kills, nine digs and three assists. Katelyn DeKeyser notched two aces, one kill, 10 digs and two assists, and Alix Bleau collected one ace, one kill and 11 digs.

Big Bay hosts Munising Baptist Thursday.
