Bucs shut out by Red Wave

QUINNESEC — It was a rough outing for the Bark River Bucs here Thursday as they dropped a 10-0 baseball decision to the Menominee Red Wave in the opening round of the Upper Peninsula Under-19 tournament.

Keagan Monroe scored the game-clincher on a botched pick-off in the sixth inning and Andrew Schroeder rapped a three-run homer in a five-run second.

“He (Schroeder) really crushed that ball,” said Bucs’ manager Matt Richer, Jr. “It seems like every time we play them, we can’t get him out. He just plays well against us.”

Nobody got more than one hit for Bark River (5-14), which faces Marquette (16-3) and Eastern U.P. (5-14) today at Quinnesec.

“We were hitting the ball, but were hitting at people,” said Richer. “You can’t win when you don’t get anyone in scoring position.”

Wyatt Riley, who threw the first four innings, took the loss.

“I thought Riley threw well,” said Richer. “He threw strikes, but they’ve been hitting the ball well all year. Our defense played well overall, although we had a few errors.”

Menominee (22-3) returns to Quinnesec to face Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette today.

The top two teams in each pool qualify for the semifinals Saturday in Iron Mountain.

Starting at $3.50/week.
