1,175 vaccine doses delivered to Delta County
ESCANABA — As vaccinations against the virus responsible for COVID-19 continue across the nation, the state has issued some additional information about distribution in Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
Across Michigan, 278,275 vaccine doses have been shipped to local health departments, hospitals and tribal health centers as of Monday. Of those doses, 192,075 were for the Pfizer vaccine and 86,200 were for the vaccine produced by Morderna.
Both vaccines have shown high levels off effectiveness agains the vaccine, but the Pfizer vaccine — which was given emergency approval by the FDA weeks before the Moderna vaccine was — requires specialized refrigeration equipment to store at ultra-cold temperatures. Vaccine providers that are not equipped to store the Pfizer vaccine will only be eligible to receive the Moderna vaccine.
Across the peninsula, 54 health care providers have enrolled in the state’s COVID vaccination program and are eligible to offer COVID-19 vaccinations. Delta, Menominee, and Schoolcraft counties each have three enrolled provider sites.
The state has not named the enrolled provider sites for security reasons, however a few hospitals have independently identified themselves as providers. In the U.P., that includes OSF St. HealthCare Hospital and Medical Group in Escanaba, Dickinson County Healthcare in Iron Mountain, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique, and UP-Health System-Marquette have all announced they are vaccine providers.
The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians also announced their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived Dec. 15. According to a statement issued by the tribe on its official website on Dec. 18, all of the initial doses had been used by that day. These vaccines — about 185 doses worth — do not appear to be included in the state’s distribution count.
While the amount of each vaccine being shipped to each provider cannot be determined based on the data available from the state, the state is reporting how many doses of each vaccine have been distributed to health departments and tribal health centers in each county in the state.
According to the state,1,175 vaccines have been distributed in Delta County. The vaccines arrived in two shipments, one of 975 doses of the Pfizer vaccine shipped to the hospital on Dec. 16, and a shipment of 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine to the health department on Dec. 20.
Only 200 vaccine doses have been delivered to Menominee County. That total includes 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine that were distributed to the health department on Dec. 20 and another 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine were distributed to the tribal health center on Dec. 22.
In Schoolcraft County, 1,075 doses have been delivered so far. That total includes 975 doses of the Pfizer vaccine that were distributed to the hospital on Dec. 16 and 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine that were delivered to the health department on Dec. 20.
The Upper Peninsula as a whole has been shipped 17,225 doses, with 10,725 for the Pfizer vaccine and 6,500 for the Moderna vaccine. U.P. hospitals have received 9,750 Pfizer doses and 1,900 Moderna doses, local health departments have received 975 Pfizer doses and 4,500 Moderna doses, and tribal health centers included in the state tally have been sent 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
