Rockets win two events despite their light roster
RAPID RIVER — They may not have scored that many points, but the Rapid River girls made a little bit of noise in their season-opening track meet April 21 at Menominee.
The Rockets, with just 10 on their roster, won both sprint relays in a triangular meet that included Escanaba and the host Maroons.
“I was real happy with the effort,” said coach Greg Rubick. “They put their work in and adapted, and I was tickled at the end of the meet over what happened. Maybe Esky was missing a couple girls in their sprints, but that was something to build on. That was a real credit to our girls. Three of the girls are experienced. They’ve done it before. Our handoffs clicked for us. They looked more in mid-season form than early in the season. It’s something you hope your girls take pride in.”
Junior Aiyana Semear anchored the sprint relays and ran in all four. Also part of the sprint relays are senior and four-year returner Addie Christoff, junior Monica Thibault and sophomore Ava McCarty. Also entered in sprints is freshman Emma Sundling.
The Rockets host the 22nd Annual Delta County Invitational today at 3.
“It’s always nice to host that meet and bring the bigger schools to Rapid River,” said Rubick. “It’s a good meet and tradition, one I hope continues for a long time.”
Christoff is also entered in pole vault and long jump. Thibault does hurdles with McCarty also in the 1600-meter relay.
“Addie is very valuable to our team,” said Rubick. “She leads by actions, and the other girls look up to her. Monica is a nice hurdler and has nice speed. Aiyana is willing to do anything we ask, and Ava is basically a sprinter. We’re looking to see where we can best utilize her in a fourth event. We have 10 girls who are willing to come to work every day. We’ve had lot bigger teams in the past, but this team is fun to coach.”
Senior Madi Porter, who missed the opener, is entered in middle distance and high jump.
Remaining hopefuls are senior Lea FeFouze (400 dash and 3200 relay, an exchange student from France, junior Madison Couillard (distances), sophomore Megan Dausey (open 800 and 1600 and 3200 relays) and freshman Madi LaCrosse (middle distances).
“Lea’s effort is second to none,” said Rubick. “She’s enjoying it, and we’re absolutely glad to have her on our team. Many things are new to her, but she’s a joy to coach. We’re trying to cover as many events as we can. I think we can be competitive, although we’re still not fully in shape. We’re hoping we can be competitive in our (Skyline Central) conference and (Division 3) regional.”
The boys have 22, including nine seniors on their team.
They are Reace Dawley (sprints and middle distances), Jaiden McCarty (high jump and distances), Jace Holmio (distances), Logan Lancour (pole vault and sprints), Mason Lippold (weight events and middle distances) and Joey Smith, Soren Gustafson, Corey Novak and Damyn Smith (weight events).
“We have a tradition which hopefully continues with our upperclassmen helping the younger guys,” said coach Steve Ostrenga. “We’re hoping the experience of our seniors helps and have some depth in our jumping events.”
Juniors include Charlie Hickman and Austin Rafuse (weight events), Taj Cavanaugh (pole vault, sprints and hurdles), Ian Sundling and Jonah Frizzell (long jump, high jump and middle distances) and Eric Lutz (middle distances).
Representing the sophomore class are Blake Lundquist (middle distances and sprints) and Nate Moore (distances).
Freshman hopefuls include Clay Christoff (pole vault and sprints), Ethan Harrison (sprints), Perry Gillmer (long jump, high jump and sprints); Ed Forslund (long jump, sprints and pole vault) and Ryan Boston-Marsh (weight events).
“Like everybody else, we haven’t been outside very much,” said Ostrenga. “We’re still trying to figure things out. It would be nice to have a few more guys, but they’re working hard. We need to find out where their best events are. We have good leadership being shown.”
