Jets earn double shut out

HERMANSVILLE — North Central’s pitchers stayed ahead of the hitters here Thursday in season-opening 10-0 and 15-0 baseball victories over the Forest Park Trojans.
Sophomore Adrian Mercier fired a no-hitter in the opener. He worked all five innings and junior Jesse Sampson didn’t allow any hits in the nightcap, which was decided in three frames on this cloudy, windy and chilly day.
“I threw a couple curveballs and a change-up, and was throwing strikes today,” Mercier said between games. “I’ve been practicing since January. My arm is in real good shape. I was pretty disappointed when it was snowing last night. I was relieved to see the snow was gone this morning. Winning our first game was really a boost.”
Mercier struck out 14 and walked one, and Sampson fanned 10, walked one and hit a batter.
“Adrian and Jesse give us a pretty good 1-2 punch,” said Jets’ coach Jason Mercier. “Both guys threw strikes, and Adrian had a big day overall.”
The Jets also generated plenty of offense. Adrian Mercier collected three hits, including a walk-off double and drove in five runs in the first game, then went 3-for-3 with five RBIs in Game 2.
“I’m proud of the guys’ offense,” said coach Mercier. “All of them were getting on base. They’re a young team, and they ran out of pitching. We wanted to keep our foot on the gas. You never want to let your opponent get back in the game. We also wanted to get out of here (due to the weather).”
Forest Park threatened in the first inning of the nightcap but stranded baserunners on second and third.
“It was nice to get outdoors,” coach Mike Larson said after the Trojans’ inaugural outing. “We knew we’d have a little work to do, but we did some good things today. This is a good group of boys. They were excited to get here and made some good defensive plays. We’ve been practicing indoors, but it’s not the same as live action. Game experience is the only thing that’s going to help. We’ll try to expand on the things we did well and improve where we struggled. It’ll come.”
The Jets scored nine times in the first and added five runs in the second frame of the nightcap. Junior Connor Florenski had two hits in the second game.
Senior Alex Naser collected two hits and three RBIs, and classmate Luke Gorzinski stole six bases in the opener.
North Central has twinbills at Kingsford Tuesday and Bark River-Harris April 22.
