Esky baseball wins, begins 4-day stand

ESCANABA — On the first of four consecutive days of baseball, the Escanaba Eskymos made their intentions clear here Wednesday.

Esky, electing to pitch by committee, used seven in a 6-2 triumph over the Kingsford Flivvers in a Great Northern Conference contest.

“They struck out nine as a group,” said Esky coach Scott Hanson. “We’re absolutely happy about that. Everything had to work out perfect for us to pull this off. This is not easy to do. You’re constantly watching pitch counts.”

The Eskymos host Negaunee in a doubleheader at Al Ness Field today at 4:30. Esky then hosts Sault Ste. Marie in a twinbill Friday and North Central in a single game Saturday.

Kingsford scored both of its runs on an error in the first inning — Riley Juneau grounded into a fielder’s choice to push Gavin Trevillian across the plate, and immediately after, Sawyer Pugh reached on an error on a ground ball as Nic Novara scored to make it 2-0.

The Eskymos (5-3 overall, 1-1 GNC) answered with three runs in its half of the first and took a 5-2 lead on Bon LaChance’s first career home run, a two-run shot to left field, in the second.

LaChance finished 3-for-3 and drove in four runs. He also had a two-run single to left, which tied the game in the first.

“Bon was locked in,” said Hanson. “He had a great day at the plate. After giving up two, we answered back right away, which was huge. It was a good game. We got a good percentage of the kids in the game. We were happy with everything.”

The Eskymos finished the scoring on LaChance’s single to left in the sixth.

“We started good,” said Kingsford coach Matt LaLonde. “We knew we’d see (Jared) Hanson right away and wanted to jump on him.

“It’s always nice to see the same pitcher through 2-3 rotations, but today we had to keep adjusting. When you can’t get hits every inning, it makes it tough to win.”

Ben Johnson added two hits and two RBIs for Esky, which collected 11 hits. Jared Hanson and Trent Lawson also had two hits. The Flivvers (5-2 overall, 2-1 league) were limited to four.

“We’re a run scoring team, and you hope to keep that going in a conference game,” said LaLonde. “We knew they’d score runs. We just didn’t match what they did today. This was our last game of the week. We’ll go back to work tomorrow and get ready for next week.”

Novara pitched 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. He struck out three, walked three and allowed five runs on eight hits. Pugh fanned one, walked one and gave up a run on three hits in relief.

The Eskymos left 10 runners on base and committed four errors.

Juneau, Trevillian and Garrett Brown collected one hit apiece.

Kingsford, which hosts Gladstone Monday, stranded nine baserunners and had no miscues.

Starting at $3.50/week.
