Wolves rally past BR-H

CARNEY — Senior guard Jerry Lee LaFord did most of his scoring in the second quarter and backcourt mate Peyton Imhoff did likewise in the next two frames, leading the Carney-Nadeau boys to a 50-43 basketball victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

Imhoff hit 17 of his 18 points in the second half, and LaFord had at least 10 of his 14 in the second quarter of this Skyline Central Conference match-up.

The Wolves trailed 16-3 early in the second stanza before they started their comeback.

“Jerry had a big second quarter,” said C-N coach Mike Polfus. “It would have been easy for our kids to fold their tents after not scoring a basket in the first quarter, but they hung in there. Credit to them for coming back.”

LaFord connected on a 21-foot set shot for the Wolves’ first field goal more than 1 1/2 minutes into the second.

Junior forward Ashton Wandahsega hit the last field goal in the second on a five-foot jump shot, bringing the Wolves within 27-21 at halftime.

The Broncos added a point to their lead early in the third when senior guard Andon Metzer split a pair of free throws.

C-N responded with eight unanswered points, taking their first lead at 29-28 on Imhoff’s 23-foot jumper from the left wing with 5:10 left in the third.

BR-H regained the lead at 4:52 when senior Anthony Miley converted a putback into an eight-foot jumper.

Metzer and senior Qwentin Johnsen followed with a layup apiece, extending the Broncos’ lead to 34-29 midway through the third.

The Broncos still led 36-33 following a layup along the left baseline by Johnsen.

Imhoff then sank a pair of treys, including a buzzer-beater to give the Wolves a 41-36 lead after the third.

BR-H trimmed its deficit to 41-39 on a 20-foot set shot by senior Trizden Tufnell two minutes into the fourth.

The Wolves, however, didn’t allow the Broncos to get any closer.

“We got off to a good start,” said BR-H coach Nicholas Lippens. “Then, we got only 16 points in the second half. You’re not going to win many games when you do that. This is a tough place to play. We were missing our leader (senior Trevor Lippens), which made it tough for us.”

C-N’s full-court pressure defense also took its toll as the Broncos committed 11 of their 19 turnovers in the second half.

“We played good defense in the first quarter. Then, we broke down mentally, and they got some easy baskets,” said Lippens. “They’re always tough on their floor, but we weren’t patient enough. We didn’t play anywhere near a perfect game, although many of the mistakes we made are fixable.”

Wandahsega added nine points for the Wolves (2-4), who finished with 10 turnovers.

“They have a good team and some good shooters,” said Polfus. “We desperately needed a win. The kids have worked hard in practice. It was nice to see that pay off. Making shots always helps. This is good for the team going forward.”

Metzer scored 10 points for the Broncos (1-3), who won the jayvee game 54-46 and host Stephenson Monday. The Wolves host Hannahville Tuesday.
