Sports Flashback June 28-July 3
June 28, 1966 — Bob McGinn tossed a two-hitter as Insurance blanked Mead 11-0 in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. Frank Kang collected three hits and John Daley and Jack Johnson had two apiece.
June 29, 1966 — Rapid River Bill’s Bar won its third straight, defeating Gladstone 7-2 in the Central Softball League. Fran Lancour scattered four hits. Orville Larchied paced Bill’s with three hits and Poly Viau added two.
June 30, 1966 — John Whitens struck out 14 and allowed eight hits, helping Powers post a 11-5 American Legion baseball victory over the Escanaba Cubs. Randy Fochesato paced the winners with four hits, including a double. Bill Hawrylow ripped a two-run homer among his three hits and Ron Mastie finished with two. Dan Mylander had two hits, including a two-run shot, for the Cubs.
Bill Boyce moved into the points lead in the Seagull class sailing races at the Escanaba Yacht Club. The victory gives him 27½ points for the season, followed by Ken Anderson 27 and Paul Bissell 26½.
Linda Uren earned medalist honors in the Upper Peninsula Invitational with an 18-hole total of 83 strokes at the Highland Golf Club. Maxine Hamacher of Iron River was runner-up at 89.
July 2, 1966 — A three-run shot over the left-centerfield fence in the fourth inning by Rick Olds made a difference in the opening game of the Escanaba Invitational softball tournament as Marquette Ging’s edged Flat Rock 7-6. Flat Rock finished with seven hits, including two apiece by Jim and Ernie Beauchamp.
June 29, 1981 — Phil Ogren of Escanaba earned top honors in the Escanaba Jaycees-Adidas five-kilometer fun run, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20:03. John Hansen of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. copped the 10-K at 39:39.
June 30, 1981 — Rapid Disposal took over the lead in the Timber Division of the American Slowpitch Association in a 15-0 softball rout of Metropolitan Bar. Dave Harris had three of Rapid’s 19 hits and Kurt Schwalbach blasted a grand slam home run.
July 2, 1981 — Mark Isaacson scattered four hits as Gladstone Murph’s Bar defeated Carney Rogette’s 3-1 in the Escanaba Fastpitch Association. Dan Gobert tripled, then tied the score on Jack Herrick’s single in the third inning. Mike Skorupski added an RBI triple then scored on Isaacson’s sacrifice fly.
Gene Harris fired a hole-in-one on Men’s Day at the Gladstone Golf Club. This marked the second ace for Harris who used a 9-iron on the 100-yard, No. 4 hole.
