LITTLE BAY DE NOC — The final race of the “June series” — though it took place on July 1 — gave Manitu and Hoopla wins in their respective classes.

Two different courses were assigned to sailboats participating in the Escanaba Yacht Club (EYC)’s fifth racing event of the season. Due to lack of wind, the original race course was altered during the event.

The cruising class headed to the number eight buoy, around the lighthouse to the wreck buoy and back to the start and finish line at Sand Point. Boats racing with spinnakers went to the number eight buoy, the number 10 buoy and then back to Sand Point.

David and Joshua Anthony’s Manitu took first place in the cruising class, followed by Jim Hansen’s Gallivant.

In the spinnaker class, Mark Meyer’s Hoopla finished ahead of Bob Yin’s Dolce.

The race was the fourth Wednesday activity of the season. The EYC routinely organizes Wednesday evening races in June and August, while July is often marked with other events. This year, live music open to the public will be hosted at the clubhouse — found across from Sand Point Lighthouse at the intersection of Water Plant Road, Ludington Street and Loren W. Jenkins Memorial Drive — on Wednesday evenings in July.

The next sailing race for the EYC and other visiting boaters will be the Midsummer Race, held on July 15. Spectators are always invited and encouraged to watch the action from the end of Sand Point.
