STEPHENSON — It was a big night for Beau Koffman and one that helped propel the Carney-Nadeau boys basketball team past Stephenson 57-46 Tuesday at Stephenson during an MHSAA Division 4 district opener.

The Wolves jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter thanks, in part, to Koffman, who scored 11 of his career-high 35 points in it.

“I think we were 6-9 in the first quarter,” Wolves coach Paul Polfus said. “Koffman had 11 in the first quarter, and we had five 3’s in there too. We shot them all at a good clip.

“I was happy with the way Beau stepped up. Senior leadership and whatnot, and the rest of the kids did a good job complementing him.”

The Eagles bounced back in the second and third, outscoring the Wolves 12-10 and 14-13 respectively, but a strong fourth quarter sealed the tournament win for Carney.

“We held on,” Polfus said. “They cut it to two in the third quarter. Koffman went nine-of-nine (from the charity stripe) down the stretch. He had a great night, and it was good to have him on a night like tonight.

“The rest of the kids did a good job defensively. We held them off long enough that they couldn’t get back in.”

The win was a bit of revenge for the Wolves, who fell to Stephenson twice in the regular season.

“It was a nice win for our kids after we lost to them twice,” Polfus said.

Koffman was followed by Jerry Lee LaFord, who collected 10.

The Eagles were led by Bryce Kuehnau with 17.

Carney moves on to face North Central at North Central Thursday for a Division 4 district semifinal.

“We haven’t played them at all this year,” Polfus said. “I’ve watched them on tape. I think it’s going to be a good match.”
