Gladstone at Gwinn
GWINN — After a disrupted first quarter, the Gladstone boys basketball team came out with resolve to dominate Gwinn in the second for a cushion that let them cruise to a 61-33 win Monday in Gwinn.
“Gwinn jumped on us early in the first quarter,” Braves coach Mike Cretens said. “They played inside to their big who gave us some trouble. Gwinn played 2-3 zone that had us flustered in the first.
“We came out with better energy and effort in the second quarter and held them to just four points.”
Cam Ballard led the Braves with 22 points and three treys. He was followed by Hunter Potier with 14.
“Cam Ballard sparked us in the second quarter with his offense,” Cretens said. “I am pleased with my bench effort tonight. We had everyone look confident and bring some scoring tonight.”
The Modeltowners were led by Reid Hill with 19 points and Tristan Janesi with 10.
“Ethan Milam was impressive in his aggressiveness on offense,” Cretens said. “We needed a win badly. We were on a losing streak and desperately needed this one.”

Norway at Bark River-Harris
HARRIS — The fourth-ranked Bark River-Harris boys remained undefeated here Monday night as they held off a late comeback by the Norway Knights in a 49-42 basketball victory.
BR-H led 40-20 early in the fourth quarter of this Skyline Central Conference match-up when senior Joey Stein sank a jump shot from in front of the free throw line.
The Broncos (11-0) led 47-32 following a layup by senior Trenton Wood-Keshick with two minutes, 11 seconds left to play.
Norway (7-5) responded with an 8-0 run, shaving its deficit to 47-40 on a pair of free throws by senior Zach Seat with 53 seconds remaining.
“We’re happy with our first-half defense,” said BR-H coach Marc Zawacki. “We gave up only 12 points. Then, I think we got a little complacent. We started swatting at the ball instead of playing good defense. It’s a win. We’ll take it.”
Wood-Keshick then gave the Broncos an insurmountable nine-point cushion on a putback off a missed free throw on their next possession.
The Broncos led 31-12 at halftime and by as much as 38-18 in the third quarter.
“Overall, I’m happy with our defense,” Zawacki said. “Only, we need to finish stronger.”
Wood-Keshick scored 13 points. Senior Nick Javurek added 11, and Stein had 10.
Seat led the Knights with 17 points. Senior Jeffrey VanHolla hit 10.

MUNISING — Despite leading at the half, the Rapid River Rockets girls’ basketball team (2-9) had victory snatched away 31-29 by the Munising Mustangs (3-6) Monday night in Munising.
The Rockets outscored the Mustangs 7-3 in the first quarter, then 10-9 in the second. However, the Mustangs mounted a charge in the second half outscoring Rapid River 19-12 in the half to take the win by two points.
Rapid River coach Scott Goodacre was happy with his team’s defensive performance.
“We had a team effort tonight on defense,” coach Goodacre said. “(We held) Jenna Matson to nine points compared to the 29 she had in our first contest.”
With time ticking away in the game, free throws made the difference.
“We missed a few key free throws in the closing seconds, and Munising made theirs,” said Goodacre.

ST. IGNACE — The Manistique Emeralds girls’ basketball team (3-5) lost 68-28 against the St. Ignace Saints (7-3) Monday in St. Ignace.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game tonight,” said Emerald coach Jenna Bradshaw. “St. Ignace has a great basketball program, and they play tough man-to-man defense.”
Bradshaw noted turnovers as something that hurt the team.
On the offensive side of things, however, the Emeralds were unhindered by the Saints’ press.
“I thought my girls did a great job breaking the press and not getting shaken up by it,” said Bradshaw.
Brooke St. John had 17 points for Manistique, leading the team in scoring.
“(She) did a good job creating looks against the tough defense and finished hard at the rim,” said Bradshaw. “She was able to draw the foul and shot 87% from the line.
“Madison Zellar also did a great job under the intense ball pressure.”
The Emeralds host the Negaunee Miners tomorrow night.

Carney-Nadeau at Mid Peninsula
ST. NICHOLAS — Anchored by a career-high 30-points from Tessa Wagner, the Carney Nadeau Wolves remained undefeated Monday night as they beat the Mid Peninsula Wolverines 58-21 in St. Nicholas.
“Tessa had a big night,” said Wolves coach Ken Linder. “They had a hard time handling her inside and we did a good job of getting her the ball in the right spots.”
In addition to her 30-point performance, Wagner also had 18 rebounds — half on offense and half on defense.
“She just had a great all-around performance,” said Linder.
Shae Linder also put up 14 for Carney.
“We did a good job of finding Shae on the backside because they were paying so much attention to Tessa,” said coach Linder.
Coach Linder noted the Wolves’ performed well as a whole defensively.
For the Wolverines, it was a hard game said coach Phil Croasdell.
“It was just tough,” Croasdell said. “They had a lot of second shots. It just kind of walked away from us. We were ice cold from the field (9-51). They put good pressure on us. We didn’t have a whole lot of easy shots either.”
Landy Koski led the Wolverines with 14.
“Landry Koski had 12 of her 14 in the second half,” Croasdell said. “We found something there, so there was a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. The girls still were (going), diving for balls. It wasn’t for lack of effort that’s for sure.”
Mid Pen, which won the JV match 36-28, hosts Superior Central Friday. The Wolves host the Bark River-Harris Broncos Wednesday night.

NLY swim
ESCANABA — NLY swimmers finished off their regular season at the YMCA 10 and under State Championship and the 11 and over Last Chance Meet held in Escanaba this past Friday and Saturday.
Esther Oswald swam her first-ever National qualifying time in the women’s 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 58.94 seconds, earning her a chance to swim in the YMCA National Swimming Festival April 8 – 11 in Brown Deer, WI.
“I’m extremely proud of Esther,” said coach Scott Dykema. “Esther has hovered near getting her national time since last spring. Even with all the shutdowns and limitations due to Covid, she continued to train on her own time to reach her goal. It’s exciting to see all of her hard work pay off and have her end her time as an NLY swimmer on such a high note.”
Esther also swam a team record-breaking 15 and over girls 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:48.19 and a new record for the 15 and over girls 100 free (55.42 secs).
Many of the NLY swimmers also saw their best times at this meet including Rachel Kramer in the 11-12 girls, Aline Norkoli in the 9-10 girls, and Manny Oswald in the 15 and over boys.
“Despite all the setbacks we’ve had this season, the kids have all worked hard. I’m glad we were able to give them a chance to swim one final meet this season since we haven’t had many meets this year. It’s a good way for the swimmers and their families to see their efforts pay off. We’re looking forward to the next swim season this coming fall already.”
NLY’s state-qualified swimmers for the 11 and over will compete at the WI/UP YMCA State Meet in Brown Deer, WI March 19 – 21.
