Escanaba at Manistique

MANISTIQUE — Everyone got a chance to play here Tuesday night as the top-ranked Escanaba Eskymos cruised to a 59-27 basketball victory over the Manistique Emeralds.

Esky led 50-10 after the third quarter of the non-conference outing.

“We rested our starters and gave everybody plenty of playing time,” said Esky coach Tracy Hudson. “We got a chance to give some time to kids who haven’t gotten much time. We also got out of here healthy. It was a good night for us.”

Trevor Brown led the Eskymos (9-0) with 14 points. Carter Hudson added eight points and four blocked shots. Wyatt Demers paced the Emeralds (3-4) with 11 points.

Esky hit 25-of-53 field goals and committed just six turnovers.

“We did a good job on the boards and took care of the ball well,” said coach Hudson. “Both teams played real hard. Manistique was missing one of its best players (Wyatt Gierke). I think they have a lot of good things to look forward to for the future.”

Esky’s jayvees also won 63-46, not allowing the Emeralds to score a point while its starters were in the game.

The Eskymos travel to Sault Ste. Marie Friday. The Emeralds visit St. Ignace Monday.

POWERS — With a little separation at halftime, the North Central boys basketball team was able to pull away in the second half, earning a 54-46 triumph over Forest Park in Powers Tuesday.

“We played pretty good tonight,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “We again had stretches where we played the game well, and we had stretches where we didn’t know what gym we were in.”

The Jets led 26-24 at the half after an even first quarter and earning a small edge in the second.

“Defensively, we took a couple strides forward, and, at times, shot the ball well,” Malone said. “Basketball is a game of runs, and we were able to hold the turnovers down just enough to come away with a win.”

Emerging from the locker room, North Central found a weak point in the Trojans’ defense and outscored them 22-11 in the third quarter to seal the win.

Bark River-Harris at Norway

NORWAY — Bark River-Harris needed overtime to get past Norway 52-44 in girls basketball Monday.

The Knights went on a 15-5 run in the fourth quarter to force the extra period, but faltered from there.

“We ran out of gas,” said Norway coach Joe Tinti. “We executed our defensive scheme for much of the game, keeping us within striking range while dealing with early foul trouble. We had way too many missed opportunities from the field,” he added.

The Knights were led by sophomore Andi Carlson’s 16 points. Cara Zawacki paced the Broncos with 15 points.

“The girls are showing their heart and are getting really exciting to watch,” said Tinti. “We need to continue to work on our offensive execution.”

The Knights hit just two of 10 free throws.

The Norway JVs also lost in overtime.

“Coach (Brian) Adams and I are proud of both of these teams as they have been dealt a tremendous amount of adversity and they keep pushing through and are getting better while doing so,” Tinti said.
