FORD RIVER — Lewis E. “Lew” Ostrander, Jr., 98, of Ford River, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 29, 2026.
Lew was born on March 17, 1928, in Painesdale, Michigan, the son of Lewis Sr. and Fay (Newman) Ostrander.
In October 1946, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his service, he attained the rank of Private First Class and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in April 1948.
On January 21, 1951, Lew married the former Marion “Lou” Williams in Detroit, Michigan, beginning a marriage that would span more than 65 years.
Lew was a self-employed mason for many years in Highland, Michigan, before beginning a career as a machinist with Interlake Steel. He retired in 1991 after 30 years of service. A quiet and hardworking man, Lew spent his life providing for his family and never shied away from hard work. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and eagerly looked forward to spending time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula hunting and fishing with his family. In his younger years, he was also an avid fast-pitch baseball player and bowler.
Following retirement, Lew and Lou decided to start a new adventure in the U.P., settling in Ford River to run a resort along M-35. Lou preceded him in death on June 16, 2016.
Above all else, Lew loved his family. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet nature, and the joy he found spending time with those he loved.
Lew is survived by his children, Sherry Lynn (John) Francis of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Edward “Gary” (Kelli) Ostrander of Escanaba, and Tim Ostrander of Ford River; grandchildren, Sherry Lee, Leon, Matthew, Cory, Mallori, James, Lewis Robert, and Olivia; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law, Linda Conrad; special friend, May Carlson; and close family friend, Misty Gorzinski.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Lou, Lew was preceded in death by several siblings.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Highland, Michigan.
The arrangements are in the care of the Crawford Funeral Homes.
