VanDamme claims U.P. Championship in Division 3 golf

WATERSMEET — The Lac Vieux Desert Casino was the site for the Division Three boys golf finals Where Lake Linden-Hubbell earned the U.P. Golf Title with a score of 321. Big Bay de Noc was second with a score of 354 and Ontonagon finished third with 361, Wakefield-Marinesco was fourth with 382 and Bessemer was fifth with 385.

The best score of the day was by Mid Peninsula sophomore Christian VanDamme who was the U.P. Champion with a score of 75 on the day. VanDamme had a pair of birdies on the day and was consistent with his game throughout the day.

“My tee shots and approaches were working well for me today,” VanDamme said. “I struggled a little with my putting but was happy with the overall performance.”

VanDamme, who had things fall apart for him in years past, said that he worked on his game a lot in the off-season and has seen the results pay off.

These kids have put in a lot of time and effort this season,” Wolverines coach Earlene Iverson said. “Christian has been runner-up and to see him break through and follow in his brothers footsteps is great to see”

The second best score of the day was by Big Bay de Noc junior Parker Pederson who shot a 78. Pederson had three birdies on the day with two of them coming on the back nine on holes 13 and 15.

The brothers Brady, Lucas and Tyler Axford all tied for third place with a score of 80.

Nathan Pipkorn finished in a four way tie for sixth place with a score of 81. Pipkorn had a little bit of a rough time on the front nine but turned it around on the back nine where he parredseven of the nine holes.
