Wolves corner Cougars
EBEN — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves were nearly as hot as a firecracker from the service line here Tuesday night as they romped to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-5, 25-15) volleyball victory over the Superior Central Cougars.
That was especially evident when junior Mary Sivula stepped up to the line as she served for the final 11 points of the first set and opened the second with 16 straight points.
“I was just mentally sharp when I was serving,” she said. “Everything definitely felt right. The other girls knew where the ball was going to go, which helped me out. I’m happy with how far I went.”
Sivula finished 23-for-23 on her serves, and junior libero Mackenzie Walcher opened the third set with a pair of aces in an 11-point run.
“We’ve definitely been focusing on serving this year,” said Wolves’ coach Steve Kedsch. “It puts a little more pressure on the other team when you keep your serves inbounds. Mary does a good job with that and serves for a high percentage. I thought we also played pretty good defense. We’ve been covering the court well lately.”
The Cougars were within 13-9 in the opener before they committed a passing error and turned the serve over to Sivula.
“They (Wolves) couldn’t do anything wrong tonight,” said Cougars’ coach Kris Bray. “I thought we had some good volleys in the first set but just couldn’t get the points. They move very well as a team. Our girls were very tentative. Then, they got more aggressive in the third set. We made them work for their points in the first and third sets. We just had too many unforced errors.”
Sivula served for seven aces, and Walcher added four for the Wolves, who are ranked among the top 10 in a statewide coaches’ poll. Liana Blahnik collected 11 kills and two blocks, and Taylor Kedsch had eight kills. Classmate Haley Ernest collected 22 assists and 11 digs.
Junior setter Charlotte Charlebois tallied 11 assists for the Cougars, who were within 20-14 following a kill by senior Stella Charlebois in the finale.
C-N finished the match with a 5-1 run and a kill by Taylor Kedsch.
The Cougars, who won the jayvee match (25-20, 22-25, 15-13), travel to North Dickinson Thursday. The Wolves host Mid Peninsula Thursday.
