NLYS wins first

ESCANABA — The Northern Lights YMCA swim team earned a win in its first meet Oct. 24 at the Delta County YMCA.

“We put a lot of time into the design for this swim meet,” coach Scott Dykema said. “It was important to keep swimmers and spectators who were entering and exiting the building and pool area socially distanced without crossing paths.

“tThe design worked out very well. Parents on the team did a fantastic job of running the new design. Everyone did an exceptional job guiding swimmers and spectators through the process.”

Isaac Berthaume (boys 15 and over) finished the 100 fly in 59.12 and the 100 freestyle in 52.47.

“Isaac has put on 20 lbs of muscle within the last year,” Dykema said. “His strength, dedication, and will to succeed has transformed Isaac into an elite swimmer.”

Esther Oswald (girls 15 and over) swam her 100 backstroke in 59.96, qualifying her for the Wisconsin State meet, and it was only .8 seconds off of a national qualifying time.
