Big Bay ends season with win

BRIMLEY — The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears ended their regular season on a positive note here Thursday in a 3-1 (26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15) volleyball victory over the Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter Eagles.

“The first set was a little shaky for us,” said Big Bay coach Angie Paulson. “I changed the lineup a bit because we were getting a little too comfortable in other games, and it didn’t play out in our favor. The second set was a little better, but we still scraped by battling some communication errors. In the third and fourth sets, the girls did much better. They were communicating more, making good passes and finding the holes on the other side.”

Katelyn DeKeyser led the Black Bears in serving with seven aces. Camryn Pederson added five. Piper Jones and Ellie Nedeau had five kills each. Alix Bleau collected 14 digs and Pederson had 12.

“Katelyn has been killing it with digs and serving lately,” said Paulson. “Her serves are quick and reliable, and her defensive game is really evolving. I’m happy to see the peak right before the tournament. She managed 20 serves with only one error tonight. She’s always our first server, and those serving runs and quick aces help lift the girls’ spirits and increase our momentum right off the bat.”

The Black Bears travel to Hannahville for next Thursday’s Northern Lights League tournament.

Big Bay de Noc — DeKeyser (seven aces), Pederson (five aces, three kills, 12 digs); Massengill (three aces, three kills, seven digs); Bleau (three aces, two kills, 14 digs); Jones (one ace, five kills, one block, six assists, six digs); Nedeau (one ace, five kills, three assists, five digs).
