C-N’s LaFord earns Skyline Central Player of the Year

HERMANSVILLE — Carney-Nadeau’s Brett LaFord dazzled during his senior season, which earned him Skyline Central Conference Player of the Year honors at the league’s annual coaches meeting in Hermansville Monday.

The senior point guard, who eclipsed 1,000 career points in a 62-56 win at Bark River-Harris Feb. 18, averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds per game this season. He scored over 30 points three times, including setting a new career-high with 40 in an 89-43 victory over Superior Central Jan. 28.

Area players also dominated the first team, which is highlighted by Rapid River seniors Tyler Sundling and Tony DeMars, North Central freshman Luke Gorzinski, Carney junior Beau Koffman and Mid Peninsula senior Zach Englund. Joining them on the first team are Norway’s Kody Hendricks, Munising’s Josh Huotari and North Dickinson’s Cameron Schultz.

Area players named to the second team include North Central’s Noah Gorzinski, Carney’s Max Baumler and Bark River-Harris’ Riley Bray. Joining them on the second team are Norway’s Logan Parolini, Munising’s Austin Killips, Stephenson’s Bryce Kuehnau and Forest Park teammates Keall Emmers and Tommy Showers.

Luke Gorzinski was also named the Defensive Player of the Year.

The rest of the all-defensive team consists of Englund, Huotari, Hendricks, LaFord, Sundling, Kuehnau, Bark River’s Carter Zawacki, Carney’s Mike Flanagan and Munising’s Jason Cornish.

Earning honorable mention were Bark River teammates Nick Javurek and Trenton Wood-Keshick, Mid Pen’s Dylan Trudell, Rapid River’s Braydon Moss, Superior Central’s Parker Maki, Munising’s Kane Nebel and North Dickinson’s Maximus Mattson.

Mid Pen won the team sportsmanship award, while the individual sportsmanship award went to Norway’s Jeff VanHolla. Norway’s Jeff Gallino won Coach of the Year, while Schultz received the free throw award for having the best percentage. He shot 83.4% from the charity stripe.
