Maggie Karl sets school record in pole vault

MANISTIQUE — Gladstone sophomore Maggie Karl enjoyed another record-setting day, soaring a school-record 10 feet, seven inches in girls’ pole vault in the Division 3 regional here Wednesday.

Her latest jump on this sunny and breezy day was two inches higher than her previous best in last week’s Manistique Emerald Invitational.

The Marquette girls were crowned regional champions with 64 points. Gladstone edged Manistique 42-37 for the runner-up spot.

Sault Ste. Marie won the boys’ 1600-meter relay in 3:36.36, just enough to earn their first regional championship in 25 years.

The Blue Devils squeezed past Marquette 58-57 for the title. Third-place Gladstone scored 31 points.

“The boys ran strong in the 1600 relay,” Sault coach Becky Arbic said. “They were confident in doing well. This was a tough meet. Marquette is always strong. You’re not going to find better competition. We had a guy (sophomore Ian Southwell) take first in the 400. In fact, we had two place in the 400 and a couple other guys stepped up.”

Karl also won the girls’ 100 hurdles in a personal-best 17.86 seconds and placed second in high jump (4-10) where she was edged on a tie-breaker by Sault sophomore Isabelle McCord.

Gladstone sophomore Ella Bracket added a first in the 400 (1:03.24) and classmate Molly Matthews took the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 50.8.

“I’ve been working on my starts in practice,” Bracket said after getting complimented by coach Jim Murtha. “That’s not by PR (personal record), but I qualified for the U.P. Finals. That’s all that really matters. It’s a long day, but I’m excited.”

Bracket also ran PBs while placing second in the 100 (13.03) and 200 (26.48).

Marquette freshman Jordan Anthony took first in the 100 (12.89) and 200 (26.43) and anchored the winning 400 and 800 relays.

Senior Ella Fure provided the Sentinels with firsts in the 800 (2:28.76), 1600 (5:36.88) and 3200 (11:56.38).

“I’m happy with it,” she said. “The meet went by very quickly. I’m super happy with our team and Emma (Ziegler) and Ava (Cantway) qualifying for the Finals. Our distance team is really strong.”

Manistique senior Gwen Brewster swept the weight events, taking shot put (32-8) and discus (85-4).

“I’m happy for Aaliyah (Sears) placing third and running a personal-best time (13.24) in the 100, and Alexandria Scheffer came out of nowhere and placed second in long jump,” Emeralds’ coach Erik Mason said. “We had 13 PRs at Negaunee (May 8). I think we have a pretty good crew going to the Finals.”

Manistique senior Kyra Carlson cleared 9-6 in pole vault for the runner-up spot and freshman Leah Joslin added seconds in the 100 hurdles (18.16) and 300s (53.15).

Escanaba senior Andrew Hamlin won boys’ long jump (20-7) and high jump (6-3).

Gladstone junior Andrew Karl took pole vault (14-0) and was runner-up in long jump (20-2).

Braves’ senior Vince DeAgostino won the 100 (11.04) and was second in the 200 in a school-record 23.7, topping the previous record (22.74) by Matt Petr in 2005.

Classmate Carter Farnes copped discus (125-½) and placed second in high jump (6-0).

“Vince was real excited about getting the school record and I was excited for him,” Braves’ coach Gary Whitmer said. “Carter had been scratching out during the past two weeks. It’s good to see him get back on track. We had some guys step up. Our 400 relay has really done well all year, but our first handoff didn’t go very well today which is unfortunate. They were getting close to the school record. We’ll take a shot at that Monday (in the Great Northern Conference meet).”

Junior Sam Moose provided Manistique with a first in shot with a personal-best toss of 45-9 and took third in discus (117-9).

Sault senior Gabe Litzner won the 1600 (4:41.31) and 3200 (10:00.18).

Marquette junior Lucas Ballard captured the 800 (2:02.83), took second in the 1600 (4:42) and third in the 3200 (10:08.6).

“My legs felt good in the 800,” he said. “The wind was a real challenge on the back stretch, but I was able to stride it out in the home stretch. I’m happy with my season so far.”
