Wolves break 3-point record in win over Nordics

FELCH — Each team had three players in double figures, with the LaFord brothers of Carney-Nadeau combining for 51 points, as the Wolves shot the lights out of the Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium, defeating North Dickinson 87-64 here Friday night.

Brett LaFord led all scorers with 34 points, with 30 of them coming from behind the arc on 10 3-pointers.

“I thought we came out and shot well the whole game, in the second half especially. We were getting good looks,” said C-N head coach Paul Polfus. “But any team always looks good when they make so many shots.”

22 made 3-pointers in a game is a school record for the Wolves, breaking their old record of 20.

“We played efficiently offensively, however we couldn’t overcome their 3-point shooting, said Nordics head coach Chris Mattson. “We played right with them in the first half. Their third quarter scoring barrage was something else.”

Maximus Mattson led the Nordics with 20 points, while Cameron Schultz chipped in 19. Justin Slagle added 11 points.

Beau Koffman netted 20 points for the Wolves, while Jerry Lee LaFord canned 17.

“We didn’t defend the 3-point line tonight, nor did we rebound well enough, coach Mattson said. “The kids played hard and never gave up despite the way they shot against us.”

North Dickinson fell to 4-12 on the season, and plays at Republic-Michigamme on Tuesday.

“We’ve had a goal as of late for the boys to shoot an extra 1,000 shots a week either before or after practice. They are sticking to it and it’s paying off for us I feel,” said Polfus.

Carney-Nadeau improved to 12-9 on the season, and is off until next Friday when it hosts Forest Park to wrap up its regular season.

C-N won the JV game 55-44, with Peyton Imhoff netting 24 for the Wolves.
