Rapid River girls can’t rally against Nordics

FELCH — The fourth-ranked North Dickinson girls basketball team got off to a quick start and shut out Rapid River in the third quarter to post a 57-37 home victory over the Rockets Monday in Skyline Central Conference action.

After leading 23-15 at halftime, the Nordics (17-2, 14-0 SCC) held the Rockets scoreless in the third quarter.

“Our transition broke down at times. They’re a very fast team and very well conditioned,” Rockets coach Scott Goodacre said. “We also struggled with ball movement on offense.”

Shania Poore then got hot for the Rockets (5-13, 5-12 SCC) in the fourth, but it was too late.

“Junior guard Shania Poore gave us a great lift tonight that we’ve been waiting for from one of the shooting guards,” Goodacre said. “Hats off to Shania. We started getting the movement we needed once Shania started hitting her shots. If we could have found that earlier in the third, I feel that we would have been right there.”

The Nordics led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Ashton Hord and Micah Lindholm led the Nordics with 15 points apiece, and Briana Smith chipped in 13.

Poore led the Rockets with a game-high 17 points.

Rapid River travels to Munising Thursday, while North Dickinson visits Carney-Nadeau in a game that will decide the conference title.
