Bark River-Harris girls earn major milestone
HARRIS — Even though they didn’t take first, the Bark River-Harris girls achieved a major milestone in the Division 2 regional track and field meet here Friday.
The Broncos won the 400-meter dash in a school-record 52.91 seconds on this sunny and warm afternoon.
“I honestly wasn’t looking at the time,” said junior Julia Nault, who anchored the winning relay. “I just kept my eyes on the finish line. We’ve been chasing that record for a long time. This definitely gives us momentum and confidence heading toward the U.P. Finals.”
Rudyard was crowned champion with 58 points, followed by Pickford 46 and BR-H 44.
The Pickford boys won for the fourth straight time with 63 points. They were followed by Rudyard 42 and BR-H 35½.
“Rudyard is very good,” Pickford senior Gunner Bennin said. “Their (BR-H’s) speed definitely surprised me and Norway’s sprint relays are really good. Our expectations were high coming in here.”
Bennin won the 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds, 200 at a personal-best 23.25 and 400 in a season-best 52.61.
Panthers’ senior John Anderson added firsts in high jump (6-4) and long jump (19-5) and freshman Jett Sawyer won pole vault (11-6).
“I’m proud of the way we stepped up and competed,” Panthers’ coach Garde Kangas said. “With this regional, it’s always a battle. Overall, I think we did well. We have the EUP meet at our place Thursday. That will give us a good chance to get another meet in before the U.P. Finals. We qualified in every event except one.”
BR-H junior Gionni McDonough took the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 15.59 and classmate Ben Knauf captured the 1600 in a season-best 4:44.42 and placed second in the 800 (2:09.08).
Rudyard, led by senior Steven Kirschner, grabbed the top three places in the 3200.
Kirschner, who was clocked at 11:01.68 in the 3200, also won the 800 (2:08.51) and took third in the 1600 (5:04.77).
Norway senior Josh Schiltz took shot put (43-1) and discus (137-2) and helped the Knights sweep the sprint relays.
Junior Emma Zawada added firsts in the 300 relays (50.36) and long (14-0) and helped the BR-H girls take both sprint relays.
Norway senior Lauren Adams won the 100 (13.17) and 200 in a season-best 27.73 and Munising sophomore Addie Bowerman copped the 100 hurdles (17.57) and shot put with a personal-best toss of 29-4.
Sophomore Katelyn Golladay was Rudyard’s leader with firsts in high jump (4-8) and disc (83-11) and third in shot (27-10).
Pickford senior Talya Schreiber continued to dominate the distances, winning the 800 (2:31.23), 1600 (5:27.74) and 3200 (11:33.99) and helping the Panthers take the 3200 relay.
“I treated this as more of a training run,” she said. “I had to pick and choose when to pick up the pace. Eventually, I’ll get acclimated to the heat. I’ll become more adapted and get through it.”
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the Upper Peninsula Finals May 30 at Kingsford.
