Norse softball splits season’s first games

MARQUETTE — The Bay College softball team bounced back from a tough loss Saturday night to respond with a 16-1 victory over the Northern Michigan University Club team Sunday to earn a split in its first games of the season this weekend at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

After the Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Norse responded with 10 hits to plate 11 runs in the bottom half. Lexi Chaillier, Morgan Letteriello, Beth Gannigan and Madison Griffin all had multiple hits in the inning.

The Norse were held scoreless in the second, but then ended the game with five runs in the third before the Wildcats could record an out.

Letteriello led the Norse with three hits and three RBIs. Chaillier, Gannigan, Griffin and Richelle Vandeville each finished with two hits. Bay had 15 hits as a team.

Brittany Schwartz picked up the win on the hill, surrendering just one run on one hit. She struck out five and walked just one.

The Norse had a harder time scoring runs in a 2-1 loss to the Concordia University JV team Saturday night.

Bay pulled ahead 1-0 after Chaillier led off the fourth with a double and later scored with two outs.

Concordia, however, answered with a two-run single by Payton Dom off Schwartz in the sixth to gain a 2-1 advantage.

The Norse, who struck out 16 times, went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

Eden Oswald got the start for Bay, pitching 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball. She struck out eight while surrendering just one hit and two walks. Schwartz took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over 1 1/3 innings. She struck out two.

The Norse head to Florida for their spring break trip March 7-13, opening with Sinclair Community College.
