Holmes wins Menominee County Sheriff seat

MENOMINEE — Menominee County voters weighed in on a number of local races Tuesday, including a hotly contested raced for the position of county sheriff.

Menominee County Sheriff

While much of the buzz around the race for sheriff was stifled with the August primary election, the question of who would serve in the position was still that largest local item on the ballot. A total of 12,333 votes were cast in the race, however 448 of those were for unresolved write-ins — individuals whose name did not appear on the ballot and had not previously filed a declaration of intent to run as a write-in candidate. Those votes, while counted, were effectively scratched from the final tally.

Of the 11,885 remaining votes, Democrat Michael T. Holmes received 6,936 votes (58%), while Republican Patrick James Armbrust received 4,949 (42%). Holmes previously served as the undersheriff and will replace current sheriff Kenny Marks.

COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION

Voters selected Kenneth W. Kline to serve in the open seat on the Menominee County Road Commission. Kline received 4,472 votes (52%) to James Marsicek’s 4,093 votes (48%). Both candidates ran as independents.

County Commission

Two seats on the Menominee County Commission were open Tuesday.

In the race to fill the commission seat for the 3rd District, Larry Phelps beat out Joe Ciochetto, 502 (62%) to 309 (38%). Both men ran as independents.

In the 5th District race, William Chech narrowly defeated Zak Aubert. Chech received 580 votes (51%) to Aubert’s 570 (49%). They were both independents.

Cedarville Township

Supervisor

Republican Linda E. Peterson secured the position of Cedarville Township Supervisor, besting Independent Ray Schebel. Peterson received 86 votes (56%) and Schebel received 68 (44%).

Dagget Township Trustee

Three candidates vied for the two open trustee positions on the Dagget Township Board. Republicans Phillip Reval and James Kayser took the seats with 248 (44%) and 245 (43%) votes respectively. James Bedient, who ran as an independent, received 71 votes (13%).

LAKE TOWNSHIP TREASURER

Republican Charlene Peterson received 149 votes (55%) to secure her spot as the Lake Township Treasurer. Barbara J. Peterson, who ran as an independent, received 121 votes (45%) in the race.

MEYER TOWNSHIP

Four candidates threw their hats in the ring for the right to serve as the Meyer Township Supervisor, but the spot was ultimately taken by Republican Ray Gurgall, who received 226 votes (43%). The other candidates, who were all independents, were Robert Gurgall, who received 185 votes (36%); Robert G. Smith, who received 80 votes (15%); and Charlie Schmidt, who received 30 votes (6%).

Meyer Township voters also weighed in on who would fill the two open trustee positions on the township board. Republicans Brenton Ayotte and Mark Schoen took the seats, receiving 376 (42%) and 351 (40%) of votes, respectively. Independent Bruce Phillips received 160 votes (18%).

NADEAU TOWNSHIP

In the race for Nadeau Township Clerk, Jason DuPont, Sr. received 345 votes (65%) and Shelie Burns received 188 votes (35%). Neither candidate was affiliated with a political party.

In the race for township treasurer, Republican Kathy Betters bested Independent Sandra Johnson, 406 votes (67%) to 201 votes (33%).

Nadeau Township voters also weighed in on who would fill the two open trustee positions. Republican Lyle Gearhart and Roy O. Berto took the seats with 397 votes (39%) and 331 votes (32%), respectively. Republican Richard Corrigan took 297 votes (29%).
