Koski wins 3 races in finals

KINGSFORD — Mid Peninsula senior Landry Koski bid farewell to her high school track career here Saturday by winning three races in the Upper Peninsula Division 3 Track Finals.

Koski, who will continue her cross country and track careers at Purdue Northwest University in Indiana this fall, captured her third consecutive 1600-meter title in five minutes, 31.74 seconds on this sunny and warm day at Flivver Field.

She also took the 800 (2:32.19) and 3200 (12:52.73).

“The weather was nice all day, then it got hot in the 3200,” she said. “The wind definitely swirled throughout the day. Although, I’m real happy with how today turned out. The 400 could have been a little better. That’s not really my race, but it’s good speedwork. I’ll take the three firsts any day, and my times were real good. This is a good stepping stone for collegiate running. Running is such a mind game. It can be so stressful.”

Ontonagon retained its title with 74 points. Stephenson edged Munising 62-60 for runner-up honors.

“This is our first U.P. trophy since 1993,” said Stephenson coach Kate Kuntze. “This is a young team, and these girls like winning. Hopefully, we can take the next step next year.”

Stephenson’s Daisy Grinsteiner became a repeat winner in pole vault at eight feet, and Jada Kuntze took high jump (4-10).

Carney-Nadeau sophomore Samantha Kedsch was runner-up in long jump at 15 feet, 8 1/2 inches, and junior Malorie Baumler placed third in shot put (30-10 3/4).

Rapid River senior Addie Christoff took third in pole vault (7-6).

The Pickford boys edged Munising 91-82 for their first championship in a decade.

Defending champ Dollar Bay took third this time with 56 points.

Dollar Bay senior Nik Thomas set D-3 records in the 1600 (4:25.91) and 3200 (10:05.59), topping the previous records (4:28.68 and 10:08.51) from three years ago by Bessemer’s Uriah Aili.

Thomas also won the 800 (2:01.27) and took fourth in the 400 (53.03).

North Central junior Luke Gorzinski was runner-up in the 100 (11.57) and 200 (23.94) and help the winning 400 (45.34) and 800, clocked in a school-record 1:35.31.

“Our handoffs absolutely went real well,” he said. “I’ve had more time to work on those now that baseball is over. This is pretty awesome. We’ve been working toward this all season.”

Junior Trent Naser provided the Jets with a victory in the 110 hurdles (16.76) and a third in the 300s (42.78).

Rapid River junior Ian Sundling earned top honors in long jump (19-6 3/4). Senior Logan Lancour took second in pole vault (12-6), and classmate Corey Novak was third in disc (112-7).

Starting at $3.50/week.
