Rockets track takes 2nd
RAPID RIVER — Keeping pace with Munising was a difficult task for area teams in a Division 3 regional track meet here Friday.
The Munising boys scored 82 points, followed by Rapid River 40 and Superior Central 19
Munising’s girls were also crowned champions with 69 points, with Rapid River edging Mid Peninsula 28-25 for the runner-up spot.
Mid Pen senior Landry Koski, however, won four events by taking the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 64.79 seconds, the 800 (2:39.04), 1600 (5:44.73) and 3200 (12:56.05).
Munising senior Jenna Matson was runner-up in the 800 (2:39.94) and helped the winning 1600 and 3200 relays and Superior Central sophomore Hannah Vaverka took second in the 400 (1:05.86).
“Our depth helps us a lot, especially in a meet like this,” said Munising coach Matt Mattson. “The girls had some nice performances in the hurdles, and Jenna ran a fantastic 800.
“Monique Brisson also ran a personal best (2:45.59). Anytime you run against Landry, you have to perform.”
The two leaders in the 800 were neck-and-neck in the second lap before Koski regained the upper hand in the last 150 yards.
“I didn’t really know what to expect in the 400,” said Koski. “This was only the second time I’ve run it this year. The girl from Superior Central really pushed me. Once I saw her, I knew I had to pick it up. I was really tired after the 800. Jenna ran a good race. My goal in the 3200 was to get under 13 minutes. If I’m under 13, I’m happy.”
Munising freshman Dayne Behning won the 100 hurdles (18.6) and 300s (52.97) and was also part of the winning 1600 relay.
Rapid River senior Addie Christoff took pole vault (7-6) and long jump (14-0) and helped the winning 400 relay, and Big Bay de Noc junior Piper Jones copped high jump (4-8).
Republic-Michigamme senior Leah McCracken won shot put (32-5) and discus (87-3), and Engadine eighth-grader Bianca Briggs captured the 100 (13.81) and anchored the winning 800 relay.
“I was happy with the way I ran today,” said Briggs, who has been dealing with a strained left quadricep. “I’ve been backing off for two weeks. I did better than I thought I would.”
The Peramaki brothers again led the Munising boys with Micaiah the 100 (11.72), 200 (23.65) and 400 (53.31) and discus (121-8). Josiah took pole vault (12-6) and placed second in the 200 (24.24) and long jump (18-7).
Munising sophomore Joe Kelley became a double-winner, taking the 110 hurdles (18.66) and 300s (45.73).
“We didn’t have Micaiah in any relays and qualified in all of them, which we attribute to our depth,” said Mattson. “We cut it off in pole vault because some of Josiah’s events were overlapping. Today was more about getting points. We qualified a lot of kids, which I think gives us a chance in the U.P. Finals.”
Rapid River junior Ian Sundling captured long jump with a personal-best leap of 19-4 and freshman Perry Gillmer added a first in high jump (5-8) and senior Logan Lancour took second in pole vault (12-0).
“The guys did a great job,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “We qualified all four relays, and Logan just missed 13 feet in pole vault. I think our 400 relay ran its best time of the year (48.53). It was good to have Reese Dawley back. He had been out with a hamstring injury and toughed it out.”
