Broncos girls shine at Munising Invitational

MUNISING — The Bark River-Harris girls shined nearly as bright as the lights at Mustang Stadium here Friday night, taking care of business while winning the Munising Lions Invitational track meet.

BR-H scored 88 1/2 points, followed by Munising 43 1/2 and Pickford 30.

The Broncos captured the 400-meter relay in a school and meet-record 53.21 seconds and established a meet record in the 800 relay (1:54.73).

“With our meet (Stephenson Invitational) getting canceled Tuesday, we worked a lot on handoffs,” said BR-H assistant coach Travis Depuydt. “The girls performed real well. Our sprinters are very strong, and Hazel (Conklin) is getting there in the hurdles. I think we’re peaking at the right time. The kids worked hard, and we’re very proud of them.”

The Pickford boys retained their title with 77 points, followed by Munising 54 and Manistique 28.

BR-H sophomore Julia Olson, who set a school record in the 400 (1:03.2) at North Dickinson May 3, won again Friday in 1:03.91, copped the 200 (28.33) and helped the winning sprint relays.

“My starts have been good,” she said. “The coaches have helped me get conditioned. There’s still a lot left in me.”

The Broncos, led by sophomore Mckenzie Hoffmeyer, grabbed the top three places in the 100.

She was clocked at 13.51, followed by freshman Marissa Ives (13.54) and senior Aspen Fredrick (13.88).

“We wanted to get at least one of the records in the sprint relays,” said Hoffmeyer, who also took long jump (15-8). “It’s getting close to the (Division 2) regionals. This helps us prepare for that. It’s a lot of fun to break the records. It’s such a feeling of accomplishment.”

Also playing major roles in the sprint relays were senior Alaska Peterson, sophomore Lauren Zawada (800) and Fredrick.

“Our handoffs went real well in the 400 relay,” said Peterson, who led off that relay. “I started real well, which I think really helps. The other girls are also doing real well, which helps us get ready for a tough regional.”

Fredrick, who anchored both sprint relays, had similar thoughts.

“The relays went well,” said Fredrick. “Although we had a big lead in the 800 relay, I knew I had to give it all I had. The regionals are only a week away.”

The Broncos also won the 1600 (4:32.38) and 3200 relays (11:17.25).

“Our handoffs need a little work, although they went well overall,” said Zawada, who also helped the longest relay. “We put a lot of work into those, and the effort really showed tonight.”

Besides helping the sprint relays and taking runner-up in the 100, Ives added a second in the 400 (1:05.63).

“Taking the top three places in the 100 gave us a lot of points,” she said. “We know how to push each other, and we trust each other. I usually don’t do the 400. I led for most of the race, but in the last 100, my legs couldn’t give it any more. Julia is a very strong runner.”

Conklin won the 100 hurdles (19.08), placed second in the 300s (53.78) and third in shot put with a personal-best 28-3 1/2.

“Everything went pretty good overall,” she said. “There was real good competition here tonight and just pushed it. My starts went well. This is the first time I placed in shot. I’m pretty happy about that.”

Mid Peninsula senior Landry Koski stormed from 25 yards back to win the 800 in a personal-best 2:30.29, nipping Manistique freshman Leah Goudreau (2:30.51) at the wire. BR-H freshman Hope Varoni placed third (2:43.21).

Koski also took the 1600 (5:45.28) and 3200 (12:47.56), both season-bests.

“I was real surprised,” she said. “It was very hot in the beginning. We’re lucky this was an under-the-lights meet. Once it got dark, it cooled off very nicely, and I really felt good. At the beginning of the 1600, it was really nice. She (Goudreau) was in front of me all the way (in the 800). I didn’t think I’d catch her. Although, I could tell she was getting tired in the end.”

Sophomore Danielle Lund provided Manistique with a first in shot (31-9 1/4) and placed second in disc (93-10), and BR-H junior Carley Varoni and Pickford’s Lizzie Storey shared first in pole vault (7-0).

In boys’ pole vault, Munising junior Josiah Peramaki soared to a meet-record 13-6, six inches short of his school-record leap at Rapid River May 5, and won long jump (19-4 3/4).

“I’m not disappointed,” he said. “I needed to extend my left arm, but today I couldn’t tuck it in. I’m trying to get consistent with going 14 feet.”

His twin brother Micaiah copped the 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.36), and disc (120-10).

Superior Central’s Wyatt Kulik became the lone area winner by taking the 400 (54.52), just .17 second ahead of Manistique junior Grant Mason.

“It was real close,” said Mason. “I had a good start and got in front, then he caught me halfway through. I thought I still had a pretty good night.”
