Former Rocket captures fourth girls basketball championship

GREEN BAY — Former Rapid River High School standout Sara (Boyer) Rohde has captured her fourth girls basketball state championship.

Rohde directed Green Bay Notre Dame to a successful defense of their 2021 Division 2 title Saturday night when the Tritons defeated Pewaukee 68-54. She also led the Tritons to back-to-back state titles in 2013-14.

Sophomore point guard Trista Fayta scored 23 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to pace Notre Dame. The Tritons broke the game open with a 21-5, second-half outburst at the Resch Center, with Fayta hitting four 3-point baskets in that span to help open a 48-33 cushion.

Notre Dame converted 6-of-8 triples in the second half.

Sarah Hardwick, the only senior in the starting lineup, added 17 points and sophomore Sydney Whitehouse added 13 points.

Rohde, a 2011 inductee to the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, was an all-state basketball and track star at Rapid River. She has been Notre Dame’s head coach for 11 seasons, after a four-year basketball career at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Starting at $4.00/week.
