Wolves extend winning streak

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves (4-0) continued their early-season success in Skyline Central Conference play Tuesday night against the Superior Central Cougars (2-2) as they won 68-14.
Tessa Wagner led the Wolves’ attack with a double-double on the night, copping 30 points and 12 total rebounds. Wagner was also spot on with her shots all night, only missing one shot from the field and one free throw.
“I told (the team) that’s as close to a perfect half as I’ve seen in a good long time,” said Wolves coach Ken Linder. “I’m very proud of them. I got after them a little this week about our execution on offense and making that extra pass, and we really did a nice job of that in the first half. We got a bunch of good looks from Tessa and from the outside, so I couldn’t be happier with our effort.”
Linder noted Wagner’s performance on both sides of the ball, primarily on defense — alongside Shae Linder — to take away Superior Central’s talented Riley Johnson and Emma Rutter.
“She had it really going tonight on both ends,” he said. “Riley Johnson’s really a fantastic player. Our objective was to take her and Emma Rutter away, and Tessa and Shea did a great job of doing that.”
Grace Maule also had a solid night scoring 14 points for Carney.
The Wolves’ plan to stifle the Cougars worked, said Superior Central coach Skip Rutter.
“We came in with a game plan, and we didn’t execute anything and we never got into our offense,” Rutter said. “I felt like we may have been a little shellshocked.”
Coach Rutter, and the Cougars, knew coming into the game stopping Wagner would be a near-impossible task.
“Of course, we knew going in Wagner was going to have a game. Our plan was not to stop her at all but make things difficult for her, and we did not even do that. But, she had a heck of a game tonight.”
Charlotte Charlebois, Riley Johnson and Alice Hancock all had four points for Superior Central, while Emma Rutter had two.
Up next for Carney is a game against the North Dickinson Nordics in Felch on Friday. Coach Linder expects that game to be a test for the team but if they can repeat the performance they had against the Cougars, he feels confident.
For Superior Central, a home game against the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears awaits them also on. Coach Rutter is hopeful that the Cougars can utilize the time before the game to get back on their feet to perform well against the Black Bears.
