Jets defeat Carney-Nadeau
POWERS — The North Central Jets boys basketball team (4-0) got their revenge for last season’s district quarterfinal loss against Carney-Nadeau by defeating the Wolves (1-2) 74-37 Thursday night in Powers in the teams’ first meeting since that March 25 game.
The Jets had four players, Jesse Sampson (19), Luke Gorzinski (18), Brady Anderson (12) and Connor Florenski (11) break ten points in the game.
While the first half wasn’t completely to North Central coach Mike Malone’s liking, there were some good takeaways from the game.
“They played a 1-2-2 and forced us to move the ball and be patient early. We pushed the tempo pretty well, but turned the ball over way too much for my taste – we need to do a way better job of securing the basketball,” Malone said. In the first half, my guys were pretty jacked up, and several of our shots were way off the mark. But, we did finish at the rim quite a few times, so I was happy with that.”
Malone also gave kudos to new Carney coach Mike Polfus.
“Hats off to Carney’s new head coach,” he said. ” In three games, Michael’s already got them playing much better basketball from the first two films I watched. They’ll be ready come march, and so will we.”
Polfus commented that the team, though still in the learning phase, is growing with the goal of being at its peak, like Malone said, in March.
“We’re still in the learning process, but we’re getting better each day. And, that’s kind of our goal right now to be ready for the end of the season,” Polfus said. “We want to collect wins but, you know, we’re learning and we’re getting better each day.”
As far as the game, Polfus was happy with the early pay from the Wolves and also noted the starting five, primarily Jerry Lee LaFord who had 16 points and Peyton Imhoff, who handled the ball well, as playing well all night.
“Our first quarter started off good because we were controlling the pace a little bit, and then we kind of got out of our offense a little bit,” he said. “Then they started running, and with a team like that you can’t let them run at all.”
