Broncos girls earn win over Nordics

HARRIS — A snowy Friday night set the stage for a dramatic 51-43 comeback win by the Bark River-Harris Broncos (2-1) girls’ basketball team over the North Dickinson Nordics in Harris.
Bark River only held the lead for a combined time of just over half a quarter (4:03) of play, bookending the game with the first lead, and more importantly, last lead of the game.
“I didn’t know if the girls had it in them, to be honest,” said Broncos coach Matt Richer. “We clawed back a few times, and North Dickinson had the answer with a couple steals, easy buckets and stuff like that. It seemed like we tired them out in the fourth quarter. They got a little sloppy with the ball, and we got a little more aggressive.”
The Broncos took the lead 22 seconds into the game as Aspen Fredrick nailed a three. But, just 11 seconds later, the Nordics answered back as they went on an 11-point run jumpstarted by Ashton Hord and Vanessa Lindholm on a pair of twos to put North Dickinson ahead 4-3.
Though Bark River stayed within striking distance through much of the game, a big fourth quarter made the difference. In the final quarter, they outscored the Nordics 21-6.
Two three-point shots from Cara Zawacki, with a three from the Nordics’ Chrislyn InGlese in between, helped turn the key on the Broncos rally putting them within two possessions — six points — of North Dickinson.
They followed this up with two doubles from Lauren Zawada and Fredrick. McKenzie Hoffmeyer then sank two crucial free throws to tie the game at 42 that allowed Fredrick to make the go-ahead two-point shot.
The Broncos led the final 3:52 to take the win.
A lack of fouls from Bark River in the third quarter allowed them to take more chances in the final quarter said Richer.
“I think we had two fouls going into the fourth quarter there, so we could be aggressive. We amped it up a bit,” he said. “I told the girls ‘don’t worry about fouls, we’re going for it.'”
Richer added the “big shots” from Hoffmeyer, Fredrick and Zawacki were difference-makers for the team.
Zawacki (14), Zawada (13) and Fredrick (12) all hit double digits scoring for the Broncos. Zawada also had eight total rebounds to lead the team.
Nordics coach Kirk Mattson felt his team simply ran out of energy come the fourth quarter.
“I think we might have run out of gas a little bit,” Mattson commented. “I thought we handled the press pretty well (until halfway through the third quarter), but I think we got a little bit tire. And, I think our panic mode set in.”
Mattson, despite the end result, was happy with the effort presented by the team.
“For the most part, I thought we played hard,” he said. “Give it to Bark River, they hit some huge shots, and that’s just how it goes.”
InGlese led North Dickinson in scoring with 14 points. She, Kassandra Cary and Micah Lindholm each hit a pair of threes for the Nordics as well.
North Dickinson hosts Norway in Felch tomorrow while the Broncos have a bit of a break before getting back on the court Friday in Rapid River against the Rockets.
