GREEN BAY — The Bayport Pirates proved to be too much for the Escanaba Eskymos here Thursday as they fell 16-7.
The Eskymos trailed 8-7 going into the bottom of the fourth inning but gave up eight runs over the next two innings.
The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the first as Ethan Orlando had a two-run single.
In the top of the third inning, junior Brody Ison tripled to right field, scoring one. The triple put Ison at seven for his career and the new school record passing Travis Villeneuve.
“It was really exciting,” Ison said. “Me and Lennox went back in forth with triples last season and to be a part of program record book is truly rewarding.”
Lennox Peacock singled on a line drive to center field to score a run and tie the game at two.
In the bottom of the third inning, senior Cayden Heier hit a three-run home run to put the Pirates up 5-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Pirates looked to deal the final blow as they scored three runs on four hits highlighted by an RBI-double by junior Arthur Adams and a single by Orlando that brought a run in on a passed ball and the Pirates led 8-2.
The Eskymos responded though in the top of the fifth as Mikaiden Hughes hit a ground ball and reached on an error, Peacock and Ashton Rymkos each singled to load the bases. Brian Boutilier drew a walk to score a run and Max LeDuc grounded into a fielder’s choice to score a run and freshman Alex Irving hit a two-run double that scored two and Bryce Bichler had an RBI-single to cut the deficit to 8-7.
“We hit the ball really well,” Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said. “We come down here for the competition. Whether we can beat a Bay Port or not we want to try. We had them 8-7 in the fourth. They pulled away late but they are one of the best programs in the state.”
The Pirates scored eight runs over the next two innings including a home run by senior Carson Hawley.
